OK guys, I have a few questions about Digital Watermarking on CDs. This all stems from an article I read from a very well known band who's promo copy of their new album showed up on P2P networks.

The record company said that each promo copy distributed to the press etc had a digital watermark on it, so they would be able to trace who had released these mp3s.

So basically I am after some information on this process.. I take it that all copies contain a different watermark, and these watermarks are then cross referenced to the person who the CD was given to. How do you "read" a watermark from the mp3s, and indeed, would the watermark survive the encoding process from CDDA to mp3?

Lots of questions and hopefully someone out there knows the answers!

Thanks in advance!

Some watermarks are persistent even after an mp3 encoding.
The best way to get a simple watermark from a track is to have two copies of the same track with two different watermarks. The entropy between the two tracks represents the watermark.
