Flac 24bit

hi,

I just make some tests with 24bit files. (I have no read any information about  supporting bit rates in flac)

And  there is  intresting fact just it seems to be all ok, but packed files for about  half sized compare to  monkey's packed files, which is generally impossible.
BUT!
After decompressing these files I getting files seems to be playable.
(not make correct test of these files yet)

What is your opinion,  please help me,  because I wanted  to archive  all my  projects contains  large amount of  24 bit  files.

Regards,
Victor

FLAC will support files from 4 bit to 32 bit.

The relevant answer in the FLAC FAQ can be found here.

Last I checked FLAC does not support 32-bit.  I thought 24 was the max.  Someone correct me if I am wrong.  When I make music in the end it is 32-bit and FLAC won't take it.

Maybe flac supports 32 bit integer?

@Dr.Victor : what do you mean, " but packed files for about half sized compare to monkey's packed files"?

"FLAC supports from 4 to 32 bits per sample. Currently the reference encoder and decoders only support up to 24 bits per sample."

hello,

Here is the file list. The flac is about half as monkey size. It's generally
impossible. (monkeys set to high pack, flac to 6)

Hm.. Maybe it will more itresting...

Check the file size of oboe_03 !  It  is a  silent soundfile...
How can it be that monkey make only half  size  from it , and flac only  few bytes.

All other sounds all not silent sounds from the list , but the difference  still big !
So the reason I think not  this.

Victor

I made a minimal test with a small music file. No weird sizes here. Also the decoded outputs were identical with the original 24-bit wave file.

I tried a completely silent file too. It seems that Monkey's Audio can squeeze digital silence more in 16-bit mode and FLAC in 24-bit mode.

However, I don't think the amount of digital silence compression makes any practical difference. The sizes are small anyway.

In any case you should compare the decoded files for making sure that they have identical audio content.

Actually, I think the Monkey's Audio developer has forgot to optimize digital silence in 24-bit mode. The 24-bit file is full of "zeros" when viewed with a hex editor. The 16-bit file contains apparently just the file header. (I used Monkey's Audio 3.99 GUI program for encoding.)

Thats strange but good. Can I ask you of a favour? What happens if you try to encode the files in this post?

Here is the files I tested

I made  my  24 bit 48kHz file Oud_02.wav packed with flac, monkey, and  monkey's
external wavpack compression.
Original was 2439k Packed ape 622k, packed flac 228k (!!!) it's not half, it's LESS THAN half !!

After decompress again I made exact file comparsion, and the file is same, No errors!
(On standard  wave files,  I need to mention that I made test on broadcast files too, on compression broadcast wav flac lost the tag information, monkey was perfect on this)

Victor
