  • Flashblok -- prevents those flash animations to ever start downloading
  • Tab Mix Plus -- Extreme control over tabs
  • FlashGot -- for integration with GetRight
  • FasterFox -- accelerates Firefox mighty good.

    An add-on to Adblock and Adblock Plus which includes an additional list of ad servers to block, also allows you to block other sites not just the ones in it's list.
  • IE Tab - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1419/
    Allows for embedding Internet Explorer into the tabs of of Firefox and using the Internet Explorer rendering engine for sites that are only IE friendly such as Windows Updates, Microsoft Updates, or other Microsoft download sites that require validation. You can add your own filters/rules that will automatically switch to the IE rendering engine when you visit particular sites such as update.microsoft.com.
  • McAfee SiteAdvisor - http://www.siteadvisor.com/
    Available for Firefox and Internet Explorer. When doing searches, and when loading sites it indicates how safe those sites are, and can help thwart off accidentally visiting a malicious site unknowingly. However you have to pay attention to its little o.k. or potentially dangerous icons.

apart from the already mentioned adblock and flashgot I also use the following for any new install:

- NoScript
- SecurePassword Generator
- SwitchProxy Tool
- SpellBound (for FF 1.5.0.4 visit MozillaZine forums).
- Session Manager (will be integrated in FF 2.0).

Does anyone know if there's an extension that will block favicons, or at the least remove them from the bookmarks file without having to resort to manually editing it?

It gets updated frequently. Now it's 2.1.20060713W and FireFox is also slated to go version 2 in the near future. I think you can get a FF 2.0 beta to play with here.

All in all, this gets firefox down to as minimal as: Titlebar, Menu-Button, URL-Editbox, Displayarea, Statusbar incl. adblock-icon

No menus, except a minimal contextmenu. Only one toolbar-button. Everything else is done via mouse (incl. opening/closing) sidebar.

I am even thinking about auto-hiding the statusbar as well - but last time i tried it, it resultet in display-glitches when scrolling.
