Vidomi Forum Returns!

Hello there! 

Anyone who's ever used Vidomi for MPEG4 conversions will be very pleased to hear that there is activity on the website again.

A new forum has been opened over at www.vidomi.com. Unfortunately, all old posts are currently unavailable due to compatibility issues between the old and new forum software.

If you've never used Vidomi then I suggest you give it a try. Even though the current version is now over 4 years old, the quality of it's output is absolutely spectacular when using the supplied XViD codec. It still makes current versions of other freeware apps that use bang-up-to-date codecs look pretty silly by comparison.

No disrespect intended to other MPEG4 software developers, but take a look and try to work out what they are doing different because it still leads by a country mile in my opinion.

ok, so what are the main strong points of Vidomi? (10 examples will do just fine.)

Hi Smok3!

Well, I can't give you 10 reasons, but here are 8 of the advantages (in no particular order) that I find irresistable about Vidomi :-

1/ Image Quality. Vidomi seems to give an apparent doubling in image detail for a given bitrate compared to every other freeware package I've tried with no visible blocking and almost no mosquito-effect. Please don't ask me how, because I don't know.

2/ Encoding Speed. Using 92% constant quality mode with the supplied XViD codec, 40 to 55FPS seems to be the norm depending upon the aspect ratio and complexity of the source material. That's over twice as fast as, for example, AutoGordianKnot or DVDx on my 2.4GHz Sempron-based PC system. In other words, the time taken to completely process a 90 minute movie will typically be around 45 minutes.

3/ Stability. I've honestly never had an unexpected crash in 5 years(?) using Vidomi. Every other app I've tried has suffered from instability at one time or another, often 99% of the way through a lengthy encode. Grrr! 

4/ Auto-cropping. Vidomi uses features called 'Hyperscale' and 'Hypercrop' to maintain the correct aspect ratio and avoid unnecessarily encoding the black bars on DVD source material. The resultant files always display with the correct aspect ratio on everything I try playing them back on. Never had that with any other app.

5/ Job queueing. A list of jobs can be queued from files on your harddrive so that you can leave the machine unattended and go and have a life. 

6/ Network splitting. Jobs can be shared across a network for even faster processing.

7/ Target size accuracy. If a target filesize is specified, Vidomi will usually be within 1MB or so of that target. Nothing else I've tried ever gets that close.

8/ Ease of use. If used in conjunction with DVD43 (a freeware 'install-and-forget' on-the-fly DVD decryptor) then Vidomi becomes a one-step solution encoding a DVD to MPEG4 straight from the DVD. Just point Vidomi at the relevant IFO file and hit 'Start Encoding'. Job done! 

I always use constant quality VBR mode at 92% and adaptive quantisation with the supplied XViD codec and the resultant files are generally between 600MB and 1.5GB per movie. These files are stored on a multimedia PC and projected onto a 60 inch screen that's viewed at a distance of around 10 feet. Nothing else that I've tried produces results that are even remotely watchable at this scale.

Almost all of the information I've given above is available on the Vidomi website. I'm just giving testiment to all that's said with the aid of several years of experience with the product. They speak with un-forked tongue. LOL!

Please at least give it a try. I wouldn't have stayed loyal to the same package for half a decade if it didn't still produce the finest results I've ever seen.

ok, i would say #6 sounds interesting, others sounds like bad commercial.

OK, I give up! 

In the month that I've been a member, most of my postings seem to have been met with a mixture of arrogance and rudeness, mostly from moderators. Shame on you!

Please ban me before I start being rude back.

I'm going back to the other forums I usually frequent where I'm at least made to feel welcome.

I'm sorry if you feel uncomfortable by some reason, but I've searched your posts and couldn't find any rude response from a moderator.

And of course, don't give up. If you find some posts unjust or unfair, you're welcome to discuss it in a gentle manner or send a PM to one of the moderators (go to the Members list and search for Moderators or Super Moderators).
