Here's my situation:
For most of my listening, I use a portable setup. ipod ---> amp ---> phones. Generally my music is encoded using 192 AAC VBR. I only have experience with iTunes. Here's what I want to do: I have an iriver H120 (rockboxed). My setup is this: H120 (digital out) ---> DAC ---> Amp ---> phones. I would like to start ripping lossless (or something very high quality) so that I can really test the fidelity of this setup. The problem is I don't know how. I've searched this very helpful forum, and now I just want a recommendation for the easiest to use encoder that will also easily allow me to transfer to the H120. Your help and advice are greatly appreciated. |

if you want something with an easy GUI, then you could use FLAC (the installer from the official website). it has a frontend which is quite good. there is also Monkey's Audio but i'm not sure if the rockbox supports it.
along with those, foobar2000 is also VERY nice. it has a CD plugin and a Converter plugin which will let you convert it to any format that you want. although, you will need the encoder for the formats(flac.exe for FLAC, mac.exe for Monkey's Audio and many more.) -------------------- http://www.foosic.org/query_user.php?user=Mangix

Thanks very much! I will give those a try. I have also heard good things about EAC. Guess I'll play around and see what works best. I feel like this is a big can of worms.... |

If your not fanatical about 'secure' ripping, you should try MediaMonkey. The basic version is free, supports flac and many other codecs, syncs mp3 devices, and a whole lot more.

I have been using EAC+FLAC with some success. For some reason Foobar2000 seems clunky to me, but I'll give it a chance. I'm also going to look at Media Monkey. |
