Just read on heise that Adobe released the beta version of a software similar to Audition, but which targets home users who don't need all features of Audition and who are not able to spend that much money. The beta runs until February 7th.

http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/

According to heise, although the software is still in beta stage, it has quite a lot of features already. The interface is very similar to the one of Audition.

Information about the price is not known, yet.

I can't even open a .wav file with it, it shows me an error instead. And .wav is the only audio format which this program is supposed to be able to open. I don't know what to think of this program..

What I've always missed in Audition is ability to edit MP3's losslessy (volume amps/fades/cuts/inserts etc.) ...or just a program with the same ease...

This is interesting. Speculating: The fact that Soundbooth runs on Intel Macs might indicate that Adobe is considering porting Audition to Mac as well.

Don't know for your .wav problem, but concerning MP3 and others the Adobe Soundbooth Getting Started doc (pdf) has this to say:
QUOTE
You can work with either audio/video or audio-only files in Soundbooth. All of the most common audio and video file formats will be supported (although, note that for licensing and other reasons MP3, MPEG-2, H.264, and FLV are not supported in this beta version).

I can't work with anything. Can anybody confirm that this software performs as it should and I'm the only one who ran into problems ??

I've seen things on other forums that strongly indicate people are doing things with the program. Not having any great interest at the moment, I haven't tried to follow anything closely.

I successfully loaded my Echoes Disc 1 CD image and it worked fine. Want me to post a screen shot or do you trust me?

Is that a drop dead date? The download is fairly large (59 MB). Is there something notable about it to make it worth the download?

From my point of view, there isn't anything special about it. If it remains this way, I see no advantage over Audacity for example.

I'm not going to download 59 Meg (even assuming I could maintain a connection long enough), so I can't say anything in particular about what it is. However, I can say something about what it might be based on this:

Before Adobe bought Audition there was CoolEdit Pro and CoolEdit 2000. The later was a stripped down version of the former, for a significantly lower price. Adobe discontinued the lower price version. People have been pleading for its return ever since because a fair number of folk have no need for all that powerful multi-tracking. CoolEdit 2000 was/is definitely superior to Audacity. Maybe this new program will, at least in some significant way, be a response to the demand for a less expensive version of Audition.

It is kind of hard to think of CoolEdit 2000 and 59 Meg together in one thought, however.

Don't hold your breath.
The offical word is "there won't be a Mac version until Audition has achieved total Windows dominance".... and as Audition is nowhere near that goal, a Mac version would seem a loooooong way off.

When was that official word initially communicated? Before or after Apple's move to intel-based macs?

It may even be the case that Soundbooth-on-intel-mac could be the testing platform for the feasibily of porting...

I'm not sure when that move occurred, but that quote is from around Feb2006, and comes from the Senior Product Manager for Audition.
