Like it or not, Folder.jpg is considered a reserved file by the shell and WMP 11... as such, it can and will process them to it's standard size of 200 x 200.

To maintain higher resolution artwork across multiple applications, embed the artwork in the actual MP3, WMA, etc. files and forget about Folder.jpg.  Even in WMP 11, the embedded art will take priority over Folder.jpg or the GUID based hidden files.

You're right! For foobar-user: You don't need to embed the artwork in mp3-file (it's a waste of space), just name the Album Art cover.jpg instead of folder.jpg. Windows explorer can rename or copy files for the whole library in one run.

Precisely, and also I have developed a habit to save a copy of the artwork in a different file name other than Folder.jpg, I use Artwork.jpg. This way just in case Folder.jpg goes missing / replaced by WMP, I still have the Artwork.jpg to restore the wrong Folder.jpg. I also embed artwork in the track for reasons mentioned countless times.

Told this to Lolita:

I know how annoying that little bastard code in WMP11 replaces even Read-Only Folder.jpg!!

Here is a workaround:

Create a Read-Only Network folder e.g. \\LOLITA-PC\Music

In WMP11, go to Monitor Folders...

Add...

Now DON'T choose \\LOLITA-PC\Music  directly from My Network Places.

Go to Entire Network

Choose Microsoft Windows Network

Choose your domain

Choose your Computer. Select \\LOLITA-PC\Music

Press OK.

You might like it that way too.

Just to save anyone loss of highers covers, as i lost them: THIS DO NOT WORK FOR WMP12!!!
