EAC...Installing ASPI (VOB.exe) Driver File Necessary? Options

Hello All.

I am starting to install EAC for the first time.
I did a general search on the internet yesterday for helping me initially configure EAC.
I found several good sites that explained how, with small variances here and there.
I found one site in particular (The Essential Ripping Guide) that recommended downloading and installing this ASPI driver (VOB.exe).

I try not to install anything I might regret and cause me to tear my hair out later on, so I thought it best to ask here first.

The site looked like it hadn't been updated in awhile, I wondered if this file was to correct an old problem that had by now been fixed by later versions of EAC?

I'd really like to get EAC up and working ASAP, looking for suggestions if I should install this file as recommended, or do you find it now unnecessary?

Or...Is there a site someone here would recommend as the 'be-all' Configure EAC site?

You don't need to install that driver unless you have a problem with the native one.

It right that you could try the native driver first, but other ASPI (especially the Nero ASPI driver) are said to work more stable. The Nero ASPI driver also doesn't have to be installed. Just download the DLL on the wiki download page and copy this file into your EAC root folder. Restart EAC and you can choose [i]Installed external ASPI interface[i] (EAC options -> Interface tab).
You shouldn't have any problems with the Nero ASPI driver.

Unless you have Windows 98, you don't really need to install an ASPI driver.

Don't know about any problems with Windows 2000/XP's native driver, IMHO those are very rare problems with old drives, that got a hype started.

I've heard people say they've heard certain drivers were unstable, but I've never seen a single person provide any tangible evidence that this was the case with respect to EAC.

I was under the impression for a while that particular versions of SPTD conflicted with only the nero driver, but I now doubt this was really the case. It seems that people like to change more than one variable at a time when conducting tests.

In my experience, ASAPI drivers were more stable than Nero ones, and EAC would rip CDs a little faster when I used them. CiTay mentions that whenever he updated firmware they would break, but I would only update the firmware of my drives once - to remove RPC2 restrictions - and no longer touch them.

Also, it's worth mentioning I was on Win2000 back then. These days I use XP, and I use the standard Win32 interface on EAC. It works fine, and I don't mind if it is a few seconds slower.
