What is the best Ogg settings for Portable Player? |

What is the recommended Ogg encoder setting for portable player?
I used to set "-V4 --vbr-new " for MP3 format. Now, I want to switch to Ogg to get a better Sound quality. Can anyone give me a hint? This post has been edited by shaohao: Feb 29 2008, 12:04 |

I think -q4 with aotuv will be very satisfactory. Even -q3 could be ok if you want to save more space

In 128 k tests lame V5 was competitive with vorbis Q4. Unfortunately you are not gonna get much better than V4 because that is already pushing many peoples ears to the limit and it is known to be better than V5. I use the Ogg Vorbis Lancer build at -q4 on my WM5 phone, although I'd recommend as low as -q3 to fit more songs into the same space. No one I've ever known has ever been able to differentiate Vorbis -q3 from a lossless reference. If in doubt, try ABXing some -q3-encoded tracks yourself - after all your ears are the ones that count the most for the quality of music on your portable player.

Then, dissatisfaction is not in tone quality. |

It depends on how much space you have, and how much music you're trying to fit on it.
If space isn't much of an issue -q 4 should be more than enough, but if it's a small player you can probably go down to -q 2 or -q 1 without things getting ugly. -------------------- http://www.last.fm/user/sls/

If you've got a really resolving MP3 player and good IEMs, you're going to hear Q4 and below quite clearly. I'm happy with Q5 95% of the time using Beosound 6 (yes I know, don't start, please listen to it before you judge me) and Sensaphonic Prophonic IVs.

I would use somewhere just between -q 5/6, which is dependent upon size of the portable. Most HD players are least 20 or 30 GB. That might be considered "ideal".

It all depends on:
1. Quality of the player 2. Quality of your earphones 3. Environment in which you will be listening For example, my situation: 1. Quality of the player: Good enough (PocketOgg running on Windows Mobile on an iPaq 2210 (yes I know it's old, but it's still serviceable)) 2. Quality of the earphones: Good enough (TDK in-ear plugs. Too much bass, but acceptable for my environ) 3. Environment in which I listen: Public Bus (with nearly no sound-deadening material between engine bay and passenger space) For my needs, I find -q 1.0 and even (sometimes) -q 0.0 quite acceptable. So, I suggest anyone trying to find the best setting to: - Use the latest & greatest aoTuV - Encode 3~5 fave tracks at -q 3, -q 2, -q 1 and -q 0 - LISTEN BTW, does anyone notice that OP's post is actually a 1-year-old post? -------------------- Nobody is Perfect.
