I may be needing new earphones soon and after my second pair of iPod earphones, I want something better.

So far Im considering the SENNHEISER CX300S. Im aiming for ~$50 but I might be willing to spend up to $100.

Any recommendations?

I just bought a pair of Sennhieser PC151 headphones for my son. His games were driving me crazy. They were $50 on sale and they have excellent sound for the price and are very comfortable. It's hard to find headphones (at least for me) that are comfortable.

The CX-300's,400's and 500's are all good choices for the price range you are looking at.

These look pretty cool too. Check out the review. I own the Shure e4c's and the Sennheiser CX-500's, but I'm intrigued by these.

Just a quick note to offer my warning against earphones from Etymotics -- they have a hanging shhhhh in treble that drove me mad.
Since that seems a common failing in earphones, I'd welcome what others have heard. I'm wondering about the Denon 751...

I wish I had gotten the CX-400's instead of the CX-500's...the little volume slider bugs me...HeadRoom doesn't carry the 400s for some reason...

The sound is awesome though just don't need the extra piece hanging there...

Just a quick update. The CX400's arrived today. Sound quality is excellent and they make a worthy replacement for the PX200's I've been using smile.gif.

Well, I can tell you a bit about the CX300s. They aren't half bad for $50, however the bass is a little "bloomy" to put it as someone described it to me. It's hard to explain exactly, but the bass is definitely the weak point. Otherwise they are pretty good. Especially it can be nice how little power is required to power them, though this caused a problem for me since I had my player set louder when in the car and had to always remember to turn it down BEFORE putting the IEMs in my ears...

To a certain extent I'd say you are better off saving up more and getting something a little better because $50 was just too limiting as I quickly discovered a short while back. (I say to a certain extent because obviously if you keep thinking "there's something better if I save up a bit more" you could easily get up to the thousand dollars range or so with those extremely high end custom IEMs that actually have to be molded to your ears... Obviously you want something close to that range even if it goes higher.) Sennheiser says they fixed the bass issues in higher end models, so this sounds like a good idea to me.

I do recommend IEMs though. In my experience, besides being more comfortable and easier to carry (useful for carrying in public in other words) they tend to have a better sound per dollar ratio versus other personal listening systems.

Personally, I saw some Shure E2Cs at a local store and grabbed them while they were still there (now they are discontinued everywhere, lol.) I'm extremely happy with them and haven't a thing to complain about. Well, I wanted more bass volume, but that's a failing of the way society has "trained" me so to speak and now I'm learning why it's better to have a good equal output like these put out (purportedly they are some of the closest to being completely flat you're likely to find normally.) The only catch is that they cost twice as much as the $50 I originally aimed at, lol. But I'm really learning to love them now.

I wouldn't go for the CX300's... Yeah they are okay, but they hiss alot... I sold them and bought AKG K324P's... Not very happy with them either, but they do sound a little better than the CX300's.

I have the Etymotic ER-6i earphones and I really like them. I got mine from Amazon.com for about $80 USD in January 2008. I think the sound is fantastic and they block a lot of background noise too.

I've been using the Etymotic ER6i-C earphones for about 2 years now and I love them. My dog ate my first pair. After calming down, I ordered another set from Amazon.
