Mac DAE Drive Features Database

This tread is being created to give the members of HA a place to post and find information about original equipment manufacture or OEM optical drives that have been installed on Mac computers.  Please note when possible indicate if the drive has been rebadged (relabeled).  For example NEC manufactures drive model xyz and sells a quantity to Sony.  Sony then resells the same drive as a Sony drive model abc, same drive different brand name and model.  Please use the first entry below as a template of what information to include.  Note all information is not required to make a post about a drive please post any information you may have about any OEM drives installed on Macs.

Pepzhez suggested to have people submit their cache analysis results obtained from XLD drive cache analysis feature. I agree with Pepzhez and  think this is crucial piece of information to include in the database.  Unfortunately only vpa has responded with any information to add to the database.  Please submit your drives info this will be beneficial to all Mac users as a valuable resource.

A shame that there's no way to actually test C2 compatibility with XLD (or with anything else on OS X).


Pepzhez - I'm not sure on compatibility of C2, but I have been able to report ability of C2 or otherwise using the drutil command. There's a lot of config info it will spit out for your drive that you can trawl through. A specific one to get C2 capabilities is the following.

The result of this command for my drive (Mashita UJ-85J) is the following.

So, despite what the DAE Database and CD Freaks report, both of these drives *do* return C2 error data. How well they do it is of course another question entirely.

With both drives, the C2 ripping mode works in XLD. Now, would a drive that doesn't return C2 error data work at all in XLD's C2 mode? Would you be able to obtain confimed AR rips via C2 on such a drive?

I'm just trying to comprehend how this all works.

I'm glad you said the last sentence.  How well your drive supports C2 is important to research, and at this point, it's worth performing some testing with whatever drives you have available.

Summary
Generally, the drive extracts rather slowly (max 5.0x) and has severe problems when pre-gap detection is turned on; the drive locks up and can only be revived by a complete restart. Whenever C2 is turned on in XLD's preferences, ripping stops after a few percent on the first song. When "don't detect pregap" is turned on, it works okay without the C2 pointers. I can use "Include pre-gap except for HTOA" on the main window, if I use "include pre-gap for all songs" the lock-ups mentioned above happens.

In short: a very sub-par drive with regards to extracting audio. :-/
