Stop EAC splitting Various Artist track titles with a /

I've tried a search but came up with nothing, possibly because it's hard to describe in a couple of words.

When ripping "Various Artists" albums in EAC the CD artist field creates the correct folder for the tracks to go into however I'd prefer to change the way it tags the tracks, is this possible.

By default EAC looks at the track titles which are in the format "artist / trackname" and it splits the left side of the / to the artist field in the tags and the right hand side to the title field. I don't want it to do this. I want it to leave the title tag as "artist / trackname" and not split it. Also I want the artist to stay as whatever I specify in the CD Artist field.

Is there a way to do this (hope it even makes sense).

I would have thought that you could do what you want by simply unchecking the Various Artists checkbox, and setting the CD Artist as you wish.  I'm not sure why you'd want to do this.

I can only assume that I'm missing something though.

Just my preference really. I like to have "Various" appear in my artists list in Winamp and in the ipod. If I tag them in what most would class as the correct way it puts loads of single songs under artists instead of them all being in one central place which I find massively annoying.

Oh, yeah I already tried just unticking it and putting "Various" in the box but all it does is create the right foldername in my file structure, it doesn't tag the songs correctly, still splits by the /.

If you set the Album Artist tag after the fact using a program like Foobar, you can have the tracks be sorted under that entry on your iPod.

That's how I handle VA albums, at least.

Tried that too, I use winamp to sync my ipod though and it doesn't support some of the things itunes does so it didn't work properly. I'd rather tag everything the way I am than use itunes

If you used "VA" instead it may work.  I'm not sure of the specifics, but I do know that EAC will treat a CD Artist value beginning with "Various" as a VA album.  If you used something that doesn't begin with "Various", like "VA", you may get around this.

NB: As Zarggg points out, the normal way to do this is to set an Album Artist tag to "Various Artists" in your tagger of choice, but I understand that this is no use to you.

Yeah, it's a pain but I can always re-tag them in the future if need be, but for now I'm happy with them the way they are. I'll try using something other than "Various" in the field then changing it back to what I want with tagging software, thats easier than copying and pasting the artist back onto the front all the time

Thanks!

Thinking on it, I remember that EAC with check the Various Artists checkbox if the freedb entry has the CD artist beginning with "Various".  I'm not sure if it has any more bearing than that.

I am actually wondering now whether EAC will split the track name on the slash irrespective of whether the Various Artists checkbox is checked, which I had never really considered before, but I guess all you can do is try "VA" and see if it works.

It now does what I want, but presents another problem, the filename now has a comma (,) instead of a dash (-) to separate artist and tracktitle plus I cant find a way to batch replace the name "VA" in the filename, so I'd have to manually copy and paste that in. Changing VA in the tags is simple though.

Getting closer.

I guess EAC will replace the illegal filename character "/" with ",".  I think the only resolve is to amend the titles before ripping to "<artist> - <title>".

Something like TheRename should be able to batch rename the files.  It's been a while since I used it.

I've actually found that mp3tag can do it, I can select all the files and select rename from tag, or something similar and it then lets me format the rename command with %artist% etc. So the only thing I now have to do is go through putting "-" in between artist and title. I think I can live with that as I'm not renaming 1000's at a time, just as I do 1 CD I'm renaming them.

Thanks again for your help.
