XLD LAME tags not readable by Tag&Rename

I've found that the tags in LAME mp3 files created by xld don't seem to be readable by the Tag&Rename product on Windows. The tags all show up as a "square" character. I've tried installing a Microsoft Unicode font, but then the squares turn into various non-English characters. The tags do seem to be readable by other programs I've tried, just not Tag&Rename. Anyone got any clues?
