Is there some tool or utility, aside from a hex editor that could be used to check MP3s for errors?

I got a few albums in mp3 format, and winamp v5.541 is unable play some songs. It displays 0:00 for length, and just skips them.

TIA

You could try complaining to the official provider who supplied the MP3 files and insist on a free working replacement. You should be within your legal rights to do so. Alternatively, buy the CDs, make your own MP3 encodings and keep the CDs as backups. smile.gif

OTOH, if these were illegal downloads then you got what you paid for.

foobar can fix some types of mp3 corruption as well.

I've truncated some VBR tracks with mp3directcut which caused seeking problems. It was easier than going back to the original lossless sources (which I own smile.gif) editing them and re-encoding.

Thanks, I'll try the recommended tools. These are recordings that to the best of my knowledge, were never released on CD, so obtaining the original or complaining to the provider is not an option.

You might want to first try completely removing all ID3 tags from the file and then re-tagging it. I find that a lot of the problems with files that won't play are due to corrupt ID3 tags. ID3Remover is ideal for removing tags...

MP3Test scans MP3 files for errors. I have an older freeware version that doesn't work on VBR files (it reports every frame as an error). I don't know if the latest version (trialware) works with VBR files or not. It doesn't fix files however...

MP3-Library is freeware and no longer developed. It has a scan feature that detects a few common MP3 problems and lets you repair them. I have an archived copy of MP3-Library on my website...

MP3Fixer is a very old command line utility that claims to be able to fix bad frames. I have no idea what it actually does or if the resulting file is actually an improvement...
