Hi all

I've searched extensively for the best programs and file types to rip my CDs for both archive and as part of my media PC. It's file size vs quality vs compatibility. I've gone with LAME Mp3 using Exact Audio Copy.

I have chosen the settings -V 0 --vbr-new %s %d -h

Is this suitable? I'm up to "J" in my collection so I hope so. To me it looked like the best option under 320kbps CBR.

If you have a recommendation please give me the full code with explanation.

I searched the forums, and am still trying to find a good site with clear breakdowns of the code and haven't found anything nice and clear. If you can share a good link I'd also be grateful.

Cheers laugh.gif

If you're happy with the file size, then by all means continue.

-h is not necesssary, though, and if you're using 3.98 (and I see no reason why you shoudn't), --vbr-new is not necessary either.

Personally I use -V3 because I find it to be transparent enough for my abilities as determined by blind testing of a small assortment of tracks that I expect to be the most difficult to encode based on what I have researched here at HA. Perhaps you might want to do the same.

I don't typically use the word archive in conjunction with lossy formats. I say this because I do keep an archive of my music, but it's done in a lossless format. This is typical for many of the members on this forum.

Hmm, I did find this but felt it wasn't clear, and conflicted with my other searches. From what I can tell, I've stumbled across a lot of old forums, which are outdated, and this new coding system is much simpler.

Thank you rolleyes.gif

Fair call about using the word "archive" when referring to a lossy format too. Thanks guys.

Creating additional command line parameters in EAC requires knowledge of two sets of parameters/switches: that of EAC and that of the encoder you're using.

Although it may seem a bit overwhelming, it really shouldn't be.

For EAC refer to the bottom of this page:
http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/en/index.php/...sion-questions/

For Lame there's this:
http://lame.cvs.sourceforge.net/*checkout*...html/index.html

Luckily the wiki pretty much covers what needs to be done. Unfortunately it was tailored towards 3.97 and things have changed for 3.98. Thankfully the switches specified for 3.97 (--vbr-new, --ignore-tag-errors) are just redundant with 3.98. Using them will cause no harm. This isn't to say that someone shouldn't update the wiki.
