I primarily use EAC, however on some very rare occassions I'll also use CDex but that's about it. I stick with those two since all my audio CD's are properly in both their databases with proper genres, etc..

    Yes it does:
  1. Install your encoder of choice into Foobar2000's program folder, such as LAME.exe, etc.
  2. Insert an audio CD.
  3. Click: File->Open Audio CD->Rip

foobar2000, does it come with any encoders? Or do you have to place them in the folder.

foobar2000 is a lot like EAC in that you must download the encoder separately and point the program to them. dBpowerAMP comes with many encoders "pre installed" such as Lame. So, with EAC and foobar2000, you must point the programs to the Lame.exe file you intend on using when encoding (or flac.exe file or...).

Yeah, I like dBpoweramp. It's actually updated with the latest codecs, unlike CDex and many others.
Winamp has also updated their ripper.

Updating the backend programs "codecs" in CDex, EAC, etc., isn't rocket science and is actually rather easy to do - just visit http://www.rarewares.org/ and download what you need.

dBpoweramp
-secure ripper (as good as EAC and often faster)
-accurate rip support
-BEST meta-data (pulls from 4 meta data providers and compares to get the best results - would like to see more providers added)
-IMHO better GUI then EAC
-updated frequently (eagerly awaiting R14...)
-developer is responsive to feature requests and suggestions!!!
-built in support for replay gain, ripping to multiple codecs, etc...
-gets album art

EAC. Very secure, free, generates logs, freedb support isn't bad.

EAC runs under Wine, so it by default gets my vote. I've had less success with dBpoweramp, but I keep trying it periodically, so I may change if I find it to be better.

But really, EAC gives me AccurateRip, and T&C for those discs not in the database, so I'm usually pretty confident that I get good rips. I can't ask for much more.

I voted for EAC because it's free and better than foobar2000 based on my testing.

A better question would be what is your favorite ripper? Which one is best is vague. Best in terms of speed? Ease of use? GUI? Security?

Also I suggest the options to be EAC, dbpoweramp, foobar2000, cdparanoia based rippers, non-secure rippers.

Since EAC is a PITA to use (so many settings to screw up it's not funny anymore, hideous UI, FOCUS STEALING BUG!!1111, etc. ) I voted for foobar2000. Easy, secure, gets the job done. smile.gif

Well, I voted null because I'm in no position to be voting for one ripper alone. I've been using EAC for years but lately I don't have the time for (and interest in) full blown secure ripping. So usually I just use fb2k with 'standard' security and offset correction.

EAC is my pick. I personally like all of the verification and extra things too, like retrieving the UPC/ISRC codes and other bits of data that are on the original CD. smile.gif

You know, there are a lot of tutorials out there that will show you how to setup the program, I actually wrote one as a matter of fact. smile.gif But I agree, there are a lot of settings, which can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on who you ask.

I am running rubyripper for a while now and its pretty damn good for my needs. It even does on the fly replaygain. OTOH Eac runs fine via Wine.

As was mentioned earlier, EAC runs perfectly in WINE. cdparanoia based rippers don't have accuraterip - enough reason for me to not use OSS in this case.

XLD uses cdparanoia and supports accuraterip in OS X.
