I am keeping FLAC for my archive files, yet I also want to be able to make some MP3s once in a while for my IPod. Which program/programs do people suggest for this? I use dbpoweramp for ripping CDs and encoding to FLAC.

You'll be wanting Foobar2000. Here's the wiki link - http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?ti...2000:Foobar2000

You could also use...dBpoweramp. But,
Save yourself sometime, foobar all the way. But to convert flac to good qaulity mp3s you'll need to setup lame.

Here is the wiki: http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=LAME

For windows you'll get the latest lame from hear: http://www.rarewares.org/mp3-lame-bundle.php

Just unpack lame to your Program Files directory and then point foobar to the lame.exe. foobar lets you do that with lame and just about any other encoder.

You can just use the default setting in foobar or if and when you feel up to it, you can use custom setting. Here are the one that serve me well:

For audio I use: -V2 -q0 --lowpass 19.7 - %d

For audio books I use: -V6 -q0 --lowpass 17 -b112 - %d

For audio books with no other sounds or music many people like: --preset voice - %d

For your iPod, there is a foobar plugin called foo_dop and many people here are very happy with it. And if not have a look at SharePod, I've been very happy with it.

Sorry to butt in on this one. Do any convertors copy album art across from FLAC to MP3?

Nevermind, I had to copy/paste the link. Clicking on the link directly does not work, however.

Yes, dBpoweramp does. It also conserves it when converting FLAC to AAC, that's what I have tested myself. I believe it is a generic feature for conversions with this tool.

I like BonkEnc - but it doesn't really make a huge difference as all 3 use Lame as the mp3 encoder anyway. (Although Bonk comes with it bundled in - I beleive you have to get Lame seperately for foobar and dB).

When I rip with dbpoweramp I embed album art to the flac file. You can also use dbpoweramp or mp3tag to add album art to existing FLAC files.

It won't let me embed album art to flac or ogg files in mp3tag.

I assure you it will work. Must be doing something wrong. Make sure you have VIEW/toggle tag panel checked. Then open FLAC files in window, select file or files, right click on the "album art" box that is on the bottom of the left hand side tag panel. Then select add album art or paste album art. Be sure to then "save" to save this in the file tags. You should be then be good to go.

It definitely works on FLAC files and MP3 but not OGG. Not sure how to embed art in OGG files but mp3tag doesn't seem to want to do it.
