Is that possible? I have a large collection of VBR mp3 albums, but would like to know if they are encoded with v0. If they are not, I want to re-encode them from a lossless source to v0. Is there a way to do this?

this question has been answered several times before on HA.
following programs can scan the encoder of the mp3 files: - EncSpot - Mr. Questionman - Foobar (not as exactly as the both above) Your files need a correct MP3 header. If so, EncSpot and Mr. Questionman can tell you what setting you or others used. -------------------- IMG: EAC>>APE&CUE[image];
LOCAL: IMG>>FB2K>>LAME[splitted]; |

Mr Questionman can display what LAME preset is used. Also foobar2000 can display what V setting is used as well.
-------------------- FLAC -5
Nero AAC 1.3.3.0 -q 0.50 |

Try Encspot or foobar2000.

Thanks! I will try those. I searched on the forums, but couldn't find anything.
