I used only the -b 128 switch in the command line.

This is the original: [attachment=6090:O_Mio.wav]

All of these were made such:
/usr/local/bin/lame -h --cbr -b 128 -m m --nores --ignore-tag-errors "O Mio.wav" "O Mio.mp3"

This is LAME 3.9.6 on a MAC PowerPC:  [attachment=6087:O_Mio_396PPC.mp3]

This is LAME 3.9.7 on an Intel Mac [attachment=6088:O_Mio_397Intel.mp3] (3.9.7 PowerPC sounds about the same)

This is LAME 3.9.8 on an intel Mac [attachment=6089:O_Mio_398Intel.mp3] (3.9.8 PowerPC sounds about the same)

Files made with your suggestions (leave out -h, use only defaults etc) will follow later. I can already tell you that the 3.9.8 VBR isn't as pretty as the 3.9.6 CBR file. She's not gargling anymore , but she's ice skating, or being pulled in a little wooden cart over a scratched wooden floor.

Anyways, that later.
