vegas (trial) can't open divx (xvid) files, windows7 Options

Hi

i 'm running windows 7

and i would like a video editor to buy

reading and surfting i found that vegas 10 is one the best video editor

better then vegas there is adobe premier

well i don't know if there is some program better the vegas but i'm running the trial version

and i can 't open , import divx file , avi extension but compressed with xvid or divx

what could i do?

could you give me some advises and feedbacks

i would appreciate them a lot

some ideas
a. maybe you could frameserve those with avisynth http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=153291
b. if it is some simple editing task virtualdub will probably cut those losslessly with direct stream enabled (cuting at keyframes only probably)
b2. or avidemux
c. convert them to something that vegas can open and edits nicely (maybe a lossless interemediate like utvideo, check http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=143624 )

All of the highly-compressed formats can be "difficult" to edit or convert. Apparently, Vegas doesn't support Xvid/DviX at all... But, with some video editors, some Xvid/DivX/MPEG-4 files work and others fail... So, if you have a camera that creates these formats you should look for a video editor that works with your files. And, you need to try it to make sure the software actually works with the particularXvid/DviX files from your camera.

If you are buying "the best" (Vegas Pro $600 USD) it's probably worthwhile to upgrade to a camera with a better format. If you download files from the Internet, you are going to run-into "problem files" once in a while...

Or, as smok3 said, you may need to convert to a different (less compressed) format.

I don't use Vegas (I use Corel Video Studio) but whenever I run into a problem format I convert it with SUPER (FREE!!!). I usually convert to MPEG-2, since I'm usually making DVDs. You may want to convert to something else. You can convert it back to Xvid/Dvix after editing, but this is lossy compression and there is theoretical quality loss with each conversion/compression.

BTW - If you download SUPER, don't get fooled by all of the ads on their confusing website... follow the links and make sure you are downloading SUPERsetup.exe.

"AVI" is misleading because AVI is a "container" or "wrapper" format that can contain audio & video with any type of compression. They probably mean AVI/DV, which is what you get from a MiniDV camera.

i tried some freesoftwares , i would like to use them , but they are not so powerfull
vegas (surfing and reading around the net is one of the best and easy ) , is cheap if you can get a academic license

i like avidemux , and virtualdub but they have not so many features

it's the first time i hear about Corel Video Studio , i know avid , adobe premiere (i guess they are the best ) but too much expensive
i 'm not a huge vegas fan , but the academic license is tempting

Vegas opens Xvid AVIs just fine if you install the Xvid codec.

Some other times it helps if you just re-mux the video content to another container. (For MKV files, for example.)
