Budget 7.1

Hi all,

I'm a poor as hell student with the glimmerings of mild-audiophilia; so I ask, what would be the most cost effective (<£150) way of setting up a 7.1 speaker system from a CD player? I understand a 'reciever' is what I'm seeking, but I'm insistent that there's another way to get 'true 7.1' without the massive cost. Assuming I have the speakers already. Any help or guidance would be much appreciated, thanks.

The only cheaper way than an AVR to set up a 7.1 system that I know of is to buy a 7.1 computer speaker system. You do get crappy speakers though, for the price you're asking. Usually without a tweeter even. Still, check if they're still available, cause most brands stopped making them.

Is there any reason you want 7.1 from a CD player rather than stereo?

Assuming you have the speakers already, as you say, then the cheapest way would be a secondhand or discontinued model receiver. They change models pretty frequently. I got an entirely satisfactory Pioneer A/V set specialled off for about the equivalent of GBP100, when its RRP was c. 500, because it didn't have HDMI output.
