[TOS #2/elitism] From: If you could classify music into ten or less g

What exactly is "Sumer is icumen in" ? Am I supposed to know this item?

Well basic musical literacy could be expected from a person who feels competent enough to propose musical classification schemes.
Ceterum censeo, there should be an "%is_stop_after_current%".

I don’t know if that quite falls under the scope of “basic musical literacy” (after a brief tour of Google and Wikipedia, so not to imply that I possess such a thing). Can we stop looking for ways to disparage and/or assert superiority to others when there is no need?

OK, sorry if I was too harsh.

But I have no musical education whatsoever, my musical literacy is rather minimal, and still I at least knew that "Summer is icumen in" was a very old piece of certain importance in music history.

If you someone attempts to establish a meaningful classification of music genre, he or she should know music, don't you think? And even if derty2 did not know that particular piece, I would rather expect an answer "OK, I did not know this, I googled it up, let me think how do I classify it" rather than boasting his/her ignorance with "What has a track named "Sumer is icumen in" got to do with a topic named "classifying music. . .genres" without any mention of an artist?". It's like someone saying "here is my all-encompassing genius classification of all poetry ever... what La Chanson de Roland? I don't know what it is and I just don't care."

Even derty2's language suggests that his or her view of music is skewed towards contemporary popular music, I mean using words "artist" and "track" in the context of "Summer is icumen in", come on. Liek people calling movements of a symphony "songs".

The saying that we are dwarfs who can see further because we are standing on the shoulders of giants is usually used in the context of science, but it applies to music as well. Music did not start with Nirvana, or the Beatles, or even Bach, and I find it lamentable that so often people completely ignore this fact.

I recall reading a text by a "musical critic" about an album by Jem. The author referred to the song "They" as "this piece with the orchestral motif pap pa ra, pap pa ra". Not only the motif in the song is performed by a choir a capella, not an orchestra, but the "critic" failed to notice that it's not just "a" motif, it is actually comes from Bach's prelude in F-minor from the second book of Das Wohltemperierte Klavier, probably one of the most important and influential pieces of Western classical music.

Rant mode off. For now...by

pawelq, I am happy to tell the world I don't know everything, I also don't like sinking the boot into other people just because I see an opening to do so.
If I was to sink the boot in, I would also attempt to construct a post which adds some global value to the thread.

Innocently enjoying a piece of music with a vacant mindset and without knowing anything about it can be a lovely experience,
and also does not preclude the listener from subjectively classifying it.

Regarding the tune "Sumer is icumen in",
I could have done my 'homework' before making my reply to Post #20, but there were something more important than my musical literacy;
the post by alanofoz was cheaply constructed AND he was posing vague questions to all the users AND he did not offer his own insights on the topic.
I did not expect anybody to pick the eyes out of my reply, but I did expect some charity from my fellow users.

If you are going to reply to my post, then don't just reply to me but ALSO give your insights on the topic !!!!!:

"If you could classify music into ten or less genres..."

Thankyou.

*** EDIT ***

I just read your Post #25 . . . I suggest you go outside and ride a bicycle a bit more often.

I don't really feel qualified enough to propose such classification, but I did make an attempt in this thread three years ago. Post #8, if you have trouble locating it.

That's a completely unnecessary personal remark.
