Foobar v1.1.16 : Hard Links Query.

The release notes for Foobar v1.1.16 states.

The File Operations component now be used to create links to files, in addition to copying/renaming/moving (beta 2).

Does this mean that if I physically move a music file via foobar itself then that music file should still be accessible from a pre-existing playlist entry?

I don't think so. If I'm correctly understanding what I've read on the subject (which isn't a lot), where creating hard links becomes handy in a foobar usage scenario is when your media is scattered around in various locations, you can create hard links to those files in one location instead of actually moving the files to that one location. Instead of having numerous entries being monitored for your media library, you can have just one, but that's only guessing on my part. It's the only scenario I can come up with (bearing in mind the fact that hard links can only be created for files on the same volume).

I haven't tried it so if anyone reading this does... you're on your own, good or bad. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will clarify or correct me if I'm mistaken in what I've posted.

Strictly speaking the file will not be moved. The data of the file is still were it was before. The link operation creates a new name for the file, so the data of the file can be accessed using two file paths. So yes, the file will still be accessible using previously existing playlist entries. Note that hard links can only be created on the same volume as the original file.

I hope it's OK to reopen this old thread... I just discovered this feature and found that it's not very well documented in the wiki. This thread seems like a good place to ask questions.

1) I just used the Link feature for the first time, and poking around in Windows Explorer I do not see how the new linked files are distinguishable from the originals. So, my first question is, in Windows 8.1, how can I see the difference between a hard link and the original file?

2) Second, given that my phone's internal memory is not near large enough to store my entire music collection, would it make sense to use hard links to populate the folder where my phone music is stored? That way I don't have to move music out of my collection in order to have it in my phone's library. FYI: I have Windows Phone 8 and I use the Sync App for Desktop, which has the user designate a folder for syncing music. So the music I wish to have on my phone needs to go into 'My Music\Phone\'.

I believe I found the answer to my first question:

See http://blogs.technet.com/b/mrsnrub/archive...hard-links.aspx

In the comments the author clarifies that there is essentially no difference between the original file and a hard link.

For all intents and purposes, both are "real" files and report the same information & (committed) contents.

If it help, consider any file as being a single hard link to the allocated disk space, and subsequent hard links are just extra references to this same data & metadata.
