I'm looking for the most compatible, most up to date tagging program there is.
Right now I'm using Tag&Rename. It seems to work pretty well.
Mp3tag looks kind of interesting.
What would you recommend?

What would you recommend?
foobar2000
I primarily use foobar for mass tagging albums, using the freedb feature, most of all the tags are accurate. Can't go wrong.

Foobar2000 isn't nearly as manageable as my current favorite (Tag&Rename), particularly in terms of navigating through directories and moving the files around, renaming them, and the like.

MP3tag, I'd say.
I'm using Mp3tag for a couple of years, and I'm very satisfied. Especially useful feature (at least for me) is export configurations. I've adapted one that exports data to LaTeX file to automatically make custom CD covers.
foobar2000 is also ok, but I miss writing the older ID3 tags (my player supports only v2.3 tags, so even if I tag files from it, I have to convert them using the Mp3tag)

I was of the same oppinion, until I recently ensured all my files were correctly tagged and started using foobar2000 to manage my files. I find this much easier, than managing the files manually.

A combination of MusicBrainz Picard and Tag&Rename works perfectly here.

I switched from ID3-TagIT to MP3tag about a year ago, and I'm quite contented with this decision.

The new Winamp auto tagger needs some improvements yet... but for a few songs it works fine, too.
Mp3tag, adds albumart to my files and its new command function works great on extraction of covers to anywhere on the harddrive so I can replace old files with new files.
Easytag (
http://easytag.sourceforge.net/ ) is what I use. It's the best tagging program for linux by far....

MP3BookHelper
it's very powerfull. Full unicode support in tags and filenames.

On Windows, MP3Tag is my favourite. I only use Foobar2000 to add 'Album Artist' tags (not sure how to do that in MP3Tag and I do not mean
BAND tags), and I also use it for ReplayGain scanning.
On Linux, I've never been taken my EasyTag, always seemed a bit unintuitive to me. I prefer Ex Falso as it has most of the features of MP3Tag I need, plus it's recently gained ReplayGain scanning support

//OT... shouldn't this thread be called: "What's you favourite tagging program?"

I'm looking for an mp3 tagger that will automatically update album info, track, year, and preferably artwork, but won't mess with my title and artist fields. Basically, one that will let me choose which tag fields I want it to fix. I know it sounds strange, but I've spent a long time verifying I have the right title on songs that may have multiple wordings or and/& conflicts in Musicbrainz and other databases, and I'd just like to keep them that way. Besides, they don't need to be fixed (or accidentally unfixed), anyway. From the sounds of it, Mp3tag seems quite popular, so I'll probably try that first, but before I download a bunch of programs in search of this option, I was just wondering if anyone knew of a good program where I could find this feature.
Thanks!

Automatically? From freedb or sth?
AFAIK MP3Tag can't update single fields automatically; all or nothing.

Foobar2000 is extremely complete and efficient. It's the only one I use and I'm fully happy with it. (I have tried mp3tag ta&rename the godfather, tagscanner).
In the last versions, the properties dialog box is awsome. I use it with freeddb and scriptmanager.

another MP3tag user here for general MP3 tagging. i like the simplicity and control over what i tag.
for bulk tagging operations, such as removing specifed (v1 & v2) fields or copying all v2 fields to v1 fields, and several other valuable bulk functions, i would recommend Mp3/Tag Studio.

I hope spoon ( dbpoweramp.com ) will release a stand alone tag editor with the release of the upcoming R13 based on the internal tagger that should be in R13. The the Advanced Metadata / Tagging Tool Request and Suggestion Thread see:

It's great natively, and the foo_discogs component is excellent for extended metadata (label, release date, catalog number, etc)

This brings me to a hack of a method to deal with the all-or-nothing auto-taggers.
Take your existing files, the let's say you want to keep the Track Artist, Album Artist, and Album Title tags, but musicbrainz the rest.
First write out the tag fields you want to preserve to the filename with the bulk renamer tool.
Then update all tags with musicbrainz.
Next use the bulk tagger to pull the Track Artist, Album Artist, and Album Title tags back from the filenames you previously wrote.
Finally rename the files using the bulk renamer in your style of choice.
It doesn't take as long as it sounds.

The Godfather. You can include/exclude track, artist, album, genre, year, composer, picture, comment... and so on. By default they are all turned on while updating album.

I'm surprised to see that nobody uses Winamp. I've been using it to edit my tags for years. Do these other programs offer some significant benefit over Winamp. I like to keep current, but wonder if it's really worth switching to one of these other applications and getting used to yet another interface.

As I mentioned above, check this out:
http://forum.dbpoweramp.com/showthread.php?t=12424If spoon implements even half of this in a standalone tagger, he would have a truly next generation tagging tool that nothing out there can compare to. Being able to pull meta-data from multiple sources, compare the results, and quickly (or automatically) choose the best data will be very powerful. Spoon has already created the best CD ripping program available, hopefully tagging will be next.

what does it do better than thegodfather?
so far i'm trying it out and i hate the interface, particularly the freedb grabber. does it allow restructuring and renaming all in one like the godfather?
the one thing i like better so far is drag and drop.

Let me ask a question again which I posted here about two weeks ago.
Many of you recommend Foobar as a tagging tool. My problem is, when I convert Flac files into Mp3 with Foobar, my LYRICS tags in Flac are not converted into USLT tags.
Which tagging tool can masscopy the LYRICS tags of Flac files into USLT tags of Mp3 files?
If no such program exists, does exist any command line tagging tool, which would add the content of a text file as a USLT tag, much in the way as metaflac works?
If this exists, then I vote for this program as the best tagging tool.

Over the years I've come to use a combination of three:
1.
MP3Tag - just amazing

2.
foobar2000 - there's not much it can't do
3.
AudioShell - a fantastic (Windows Explorer) shell extension plug-in which allows you to view and edit music tags directly in Windows Explorer

YARFTP (yet ANOTHER request for tagging programs

) Oh no!
Ok, I'll throw my hat into the mix: TagScanner. Been meaning to switch over to MP3Tag, but have grown very comfortable with TagScanner over the years. I am still using 4.9, maybe the newest version can support mp4.

I use mp3tag. But I would like an option to search in tags. Kinda like the google syntax, e.g. -artist:black -albumartist:black filetype:flac to get hits on "black" in FLAC files except in artist or album artist.
Recommendations, anyone?

I use
Softpointer's Tag&Rename. MP3Tag has trouble reading older VBR files and reports the bitrates inaccurately. (At least on the version I used last) Tag&Rename is granular, you can choose to download and edit any portion of the metadata, i.e. year, genre, track # using freedb or amazon's database without overwriting other portions of the tag. It will also allow you to embed the album artwork into the file tag. (makes the mp3 larger, but prevents media players such as itunes from fetching them from their database and overwriting the tag fields on your library.) Unfortunately it's not free but I think it's worth the $21.
