Full Version: Really basic audio streaming

Hi,

I want to be able to send audio from one PC to another. I spend most of my time at my "work" computer. It has my music collection, but just earphones. I also have a "home" computer which is connected to an amplifier and some decent speakers. Both run Windows XP and I currently use foobar2000 as my audio player.

I started thinking that it would be nice if I could stream the audio from my work computer to my home one and have the music come out the speakers.

I've done a fair amount of searching and have been able to get basic functionality with VLC RTP Unicast. This is not really suitable for two reasons:

1. VLC running as a NT Service (receiving on the home computer) does not seem stable. I have to re-start it often as the audio seems to get out of sync and become very "chopped up". There are probably VLC configuration options that would fix this.

2. I would rather continue using foobar2000 as my audio player.

My reading suggests that I should be able to do it with Oddcast and Icecast, or similar. These are new to me and there would be a bit of a learning curve and I can't help but think that this would be overkill for what I am trying to do. This solution would also seem to require more intervention on the "home" computer than I would like - it would be nice if it could be just a dumb receiver.

Is there any simple way to do this?

Thanks,

Brian

share the music folder and use some sort of vnc to control fb2k on the home computer?

1. share music folder on work comp,
2. install vnc server on home comp,
3. run vnc client on work comp ...

Install Music Browser on your music pc, and set it up for server playback. Specify a command line argument for the server playback that will start your music in e.g. winamp. Voila!
