Ok
1st: Why does Itunes encode with a .m4a extension, what does it mean? to play it in windows i have to change it to mp4.

2nd: Whats the best, free (or not), encoder for Windows? for Linux?

3rd: Im trying to install the xmms-aac plugin, and when i run Xmms i get
/usr/lib/libid3-3.8.so.0: undefined symbol: __vt_8iostream.3ios
/usr/lib/xmms/Input/libaac.so: undefined symbol: createDialogInfo
Any ideas?

4th: Is there any programs besides nero for windows to burn AAC?

5th: Whats the difference between MP4 / AAC ? (and look at 1st question)

Thank you all for reading.

1: M4A=MP4, just a different extension to designate audio-only stream. M4V would be video only. You can also edit the File Types under Folder Options (i.e. add Registry keys) to make M4A integrate better with Windows

2: rjamorim is in the process of conducting tests, and it is still uncertain which is the best. As far as I understand QuckTime Pro (albeit CBR) produces the best results.

3: I know nothing about XMMS, sorry.

4: You can always use FAAD to decode to WAV and burn. I don't know any other way.

5: AAC is the official audio format of the MPEG-4 standard. MP4 is the container (much like AVI, Ogg/OGM, and Matroska) used in this standard, and is heavily based on the QuickTime Movie format.

I hope that helps.

faad2 is an aac decoder (faad was the old version), faac ist the aac encoder from the same developers.
for frontends download the faac binaries at rarewares or if you have nero the faac plugin from mausau

open source in quicktime -> file -> export -> "movie to mpeg-4" (+options) -> save

btw. you can also try nero's official aac plugin -> produces also very good quality (there is already a test planned which will show which aac encoder produces best quality...)

Please note that this requires that you register and pay Apple to get QuickTime Pro. The functionalities are available through the QuickTime API, but AFAIK, no applications utilise it on Windows. On a Macintosh, you can use AACelerator.

Speek's frontend, Ivan & Menno, IMHO is a good frontend for the Psytel AAC Encoder and FAAD. To get a frontend for FAAC & FAAD, go to the AAC section of RareWares and download the FAAC binaries. The archive contains a frontend. The FAAC Nero plugin can be found at the Nero plugins section at cd-rw.org.
