Hi, I was refered to the above webpage by someone and I have a few questions. First of all, I have encoded a good portion of my cd collection to mp3. I used EAC secure mode and encoded with the reccomended LAME compile with alt preset insane. It sounds transparent to me, but in reading that website it is alarming. I use the MAD decoder and on many of my songs I get a bunch of clipped samples. What I am wondering is however, if the problem is mainly the cds going to right below 0 dBfs or are a lot of them actually infact clipping? If its the latter, there isnt too much I can do about it... However, if it can be fixed by lowering the amplitude of the signal, I might have to start doing it this way. However, how much of a difference is it going to make? Is it really worth the extra time it takes? Thanks!

From the link: "clipping occurs only when decoding"

With MP3's, all the data is there, unclipped, in the file. You just need to lower the amplitude before decoding. MAD has auto-attenuation, which will lower the volume a bit whenever it runs across a clipped sample. But there's something better you can use: MP3Gain.

Do a search on the forum for "mp3gain" to find out more. Basically, it does a lossless (i.e. completely reversible) volume reduction to your MP3's, so they play a bit quieter. The added bonus is that you get "replaygain" (search for that, too), which can adjust different albums by different volumes so they have an equal perceived loudness.

But if you don't want the benefit of replaygain, you can use MP3gain to apply a constant gain, in 1.5dB increments. So, you could take your entire collection, run MP3gain on it using a constant -1.5dB gain, and probably eliminate any clipping present in your MP3's. If for some reason you don't like what MP3gain did, just apply a 1.5dB gain to everything, and you're right back to where you started.

No re-ripping or re-encoding necessary! You can breathe a sigh of relief. biggrin.gif
