i just tried to use the -alt-preset for encoding some music to my compaq ipaq.

howevre the --alt-preset only flex as low as 80kbits

anybody know why ?

and does anybody have som good 64kbits preset ?

MP3 is bad for 64K afaik...

I guess Dibrom hasn't gotten around to tuning LAME for bitrates lower than 80. But hey, it must have been a lot of work all those tunings that are already there.

If you really want to stick with MP3, you could try mp3PRO. At 64 kbps, I think mp3PRO is better than regular MP3s (at same bitrate).

Otherwise, I'd agree with the advice on using Ogg (which is damn sweet! smile.gif )

If you want to stick with normal mp3, I might try something like:

-b64 -h --nspsytune --lowpass 11 --scale 0.85

If the artifacting is too much, try reducing the lowpass until you find a tradeoff you can live with.

i my ipaq really did support these i woulde go this way.

I'd really love to have AAC support on my ipaq :-)

Aiii... if I had to lowpass below 16KHz, I wouldn't wanna know about it... someone else could do the encoding for me. biggrin.gif

My 64kbps line is:
-h -b 64 --nssafejoint --ns-bass -8 --scale 0.90 --nspsytune --athtype 2

I really have no idea what should be best at low bitrates, though. So can somebody tell me what should stay and what should go and what should be changed in my line?

I don't think you can afford --nssafejoint at such a low bitrate...

Okay, I took that outta there. Thanks for the help.

1. You need to use -mj, --nssafejoint without -mj is meaningless,
2. --scale 0.90 is not enough, at --alt-preset 80, it already uses --scale 0.85
3. You don't have enough bits for --ns-bass -8, --alt-preset 80 uses only -3
4. You don't have enough bits for --nssafejoint
5. --nspsytune must appear before -h, --nssafejoint and --ns-bass
6. Where is your lowpass?
7. Are you going to stop lame from resampling to 22k or 32k?

but j-stereo is default at 64 kbit/s

It doesn't seem to make a difference where these go in relation to --nspsytune.

default yields a lowpass transition from 8.6 to 8.9 kHz, which is too low for my tastes, but which may satisfy some people at this bitrate.

default is resampling to 22 kHz, which is appropriate at this bitrate.

Thank you for the advice so far smile.gif
