hi,
if you want to stay with virtualdub AND your mp3 is CBR, you can use wavemp3 to write a wav header to your mp3 file, then load this "wav" file in virtualdub, as usual

I don't know if it's still updated, but here's where I got the modified VirtualDub compile that handles VBR MP3 :
