Full Version: Foobar's replaygain vs MP3gain?

Just wondering, which'd be better to use? I read an interesting thing asnd I got it to work which says how to convert APE+CUE files into seperate MP3 files in one step with FooBar2000, and did it with one CD to see if it worked, and it did.

Anyway, what'd be better, checking the use replaygain box in foobar2000's diskwriter preferences, and using track gain, or using mp3gain with track gain? Or are they both the same. I think I'd go with mp3gain because it has max no clip gain which I don't see in foobar's options for replaygain, yet I'd want foobar's since I wouldn't have anything to do afterwards. Thanks. smile.gif

except for the fact that mp3gain can only adjust in 1.5dB steps you will get similar results, they both do the same thing.

Not necessarily true. foobar's use is tag based, while mp3gain is permanent alteration of the file. You have to decide if you want an altered file or not.

Foobar's replaygain:
  • tag based
  • both track and album gain values added
  • More precise
  • Only foobar can use it (AFAIK)
  • Adjustable in foobar (89dB being default)

MP3gain (old only?) replaygain:
  • modifies the file itself
  • only album gain or track gain can be used
  • Less precise
  • All players will handle it the same as the file itself is modified.
  • Not adjustable in players
  • Only reversable if you have the replaygain log

There are times when both are useful. For example, the tag-based system works great when you're listening on your computer, but the only way to take that data with you on a portable is to transcode.

Or have the best of both with the MP3gain betas.
Just analyse and the tags are there for FooBar2000 to use (well after reload info from file smile.gif ). Then adjust for non-replaygain-tag aware players (read non FooBar2000), as you like, and the replygain tags are corrected so the replaygained volume in foobar stays the same.

re-read the original post...he's simply outputting to wav, so what happens to the mp3 itself is meaningless as far as his result is concerned.
