You won't be very far out if you simply take the file size in bytes and divide it by the play time in seconds. It won't be 100% accurate because of headers, etc., but it won't be too far away.

the former solutions are way too simple ,) you can make a balanced mean:
Average bitrate = (Filesize*8)/(track length) Filesize in bytes, track length in seconds. Bitrate in bits per second, divide by 1000 to get kbps Please do not nitpick about file headers, id tags etc....
