Full Version: CD Audio playback problem

No sound when playing CDs
I have tried a few Media Players and there is no sound when playing CDs.
Windows MediaPlayer 7 will play CDs but I hate it and prefer either Foobar, UltraPlayer
or QCD.
I have checked that CD Audiio is not muted in Play Control. The Creative Mixer has been checked also and CD Audio is enabled.
One odd thing is that in Device Manager under Properties for my CD Drive (LITE-ON LTR-16102B) the section for Digital Audio Playback is greyed out and I can see that Digital CD Audio for this device is enabled. I reckon that if I was able to uncheck this option then I might get a result. Unfortunately, as I said, it is greyed out.
I can hear MIDI, Wave and MP3 but not CD. Is it a Codec problem or am I missing some thing stupidly obvious here.

Try:

a ) disabling digital playback in WMP (it does some stupid things)
b ) upgrading WMP

It may be that the audio cable is missing between your sound card and the cdrom drive.
All the audio works well, and ms media player plays the audio cd by doing digital extraction (at least wmp8 and wmp9 do).
AstralStorm
Foobar also utiliizes digital extraction, so...

c ) install another version of ASPI

Thanks everyone. I've just discovered that the cable between the CD Drive and the sound card was duff. Have changed it for another and now all is well.
However, this has led to a couple of other queries.
1) Whether I disable digital CD Audio in WMP or not seems to make no difference. All the Media players I use (Foobar, QCD and UltraPlayer) now work regardless - the CDROM properties in Device Manager still has 'Digital CD Playback' greyed-out and it is enabled. I don't remember this being the case prior to my initial problem.
2) What are the benefits of installing ASPI 4.71.2?
3) Is sound quality much better using Digital Extraction via Foobar & WMP?

Thanks again for leading me to my problem

Probably none on Win9x/ME. I've thought you had a problem with digital extraction,
which might have been caused by ASPI drivers.

Certainly. Analog playback introduces noise, while digital is bit identical if there are no uncorrectable errors.
