i just bought a dual 867mhz G4. it has a superdrive (cd writer, dvd writer, i dont know they exact specs on it) and it should be arriving sometime next week.

can anyone give me some recomendations on how to get the best rips/encodes with this system? good software? where can i get lame compiles for os x? i'm used to using eac and lame 3.90.2

if it helps, i encode for portable use, my cdmp3 player is pickey, it has to be cbr, and i prefer 128kbit for size. oh, and i like using mp3gain, it's nice.

Easy solution.

thanks, that should help a lot. now, what about ripping? is itunes good enough?

I'll second the vote on the itunes lame encoder v.2. It works great.

I wanted to point out that if you are interested in using the newly recommended 3.90.3. You can download the source for linux machines and compile it on OS X. Get it here. You need the developers tools for building lame on your computer. Compile it using this information from macosxhints.

I don't remember how it stands up in ABX tests, but I really don't think the iTunes encoder is all that bad, compared to other encoders (it does have a decent VBR setting - though I think it's more like ABR). But, that's just me.

Nonetheless, I totally understand your motivation to use LAME, and thereby squeeze another 2% quality into those files, even though it takes 4x longer to do so (as LAME has no PPC optimization). I do it too. wink.gif

Anyway, don't forget this: http://homepage.mac.com/beryrinaldo/AudioT...ron/MacMP3Gain/

Now if only there were such a thing for AAC (then again, maybe there is -- I've neglected my reading of HA as of late)...

ah, now that's useful! macmp3gain! that's something i thought i was going to miss when i switched over to a mac.

as for compiling my own version of lame for osx.... i wouldnt know where to start. i dont even know what compiling means. i'll try out the itunes encoder, but i'd also like to try lame. is there a version already made for osx?

edited for typos

It seems that you are confusing the iTunes encoder with the iTunes LAME encoder. These are different; the iTunes LAME encoder is a separate download (see post above by blessingx) from the encoder that's actually built into iTunes. And actually the itunes LAME encoder v.2 includes LAME 3.92 built in so no compiling is necessary. You would only need to complile your own LAME if you wanted to use a different version other than 3.92.

Hope that helps

Perhaps I wasn't clear. My link (see first post) has the compiles you asked for. Did you try them?
