so my girlfriend bought an ipod the other day and its great, as i'm sure any of you know who have checked it out. my only question is why does it seem to be the only player that lets you scroll through folders and files like in windows? aren't there any non-HD based players that have the same features as the ipod but aren't so expensive (not to mention fragile)? A 256 meg compact flash card is less than $60... aren't there any solid-state mp3 players out there with an ipod-style display? and who really needs 10 gigs of music in a portable player anyway? thanks

You may want to check out the range of products available at
http://www.hotmp3gear.com The Archos Ondio or the Pogo Ripflash might be just what you are after. I've been a proud owner of the Archos 20Gb multimedia jukebox for over 6 months, and it really does the trick.

And the new range of Archos products look even more awesome.

Here's a full overview of hdd-players. The main text is in Dutch, but the spec-listings and pictures and ofcourse the manufacturer URLs may be convenient for you.
For flash based with artist, album, etc selection on the player (just like an iPod) - the only one I have seen that does this is the Neuros Audio Player.

...my zen has all those options. i can organize by album, artist, genre, whatever. it's not AS intuitive as an ipod (another guy in my office has ipod), but it's certainly not difficult in the slightest.

screw it. bought an ipod off amazon.com. for a little while longer they still have this deal where you get 50$ off your next electronics purchase - which is quite a deal considering theres no limit to the stuff they have. on top of that, free shipping, no tax. eh- gotta hand it to apple,
