it's going on w/ my laptop....i do have a generic cd burner/dvd player in there; listed as a 'slimtypecombo lsc-24081 adapter 1 id:0', in eac.
getting like 1x to maybe 2x encode. i used to get alot faster, but that was w/ C2 enabled; and i was getting audible pops in the mp3's....this 1x-2x is w/ accurate stream (c2 disabled)
i'd be more than happy to get another cd drive that will work w/ my dell laptop, if someone knows of one that will work, but it seems that there is likely something set wrong in EAC that's giving me these slow speeds, no?
i used some tutorial on the web to set it up...not sure which one....is there one that's better than others?
{edit} found out that it was "the coaster factory" website tutorial.
any ideas?
For a perfect cd my drive gives me 2.5X ripping speed, but if your cd contains errors EAC takes longer to re-read so that it can get an accurate result. Therefore the speed can drop to almost nothing depending on the cd.
Everything should be fine...just accept that ripping takes time
Some drives are faster than others though. I think the plextor drives are usually very fast.
I only get 6x with my plextor.

.....plextor makes a slimline cd...it looks like it will fit in my laptop...i'm wondering if i should just buy it and try it.
If it goes slower, your CD might have Sony key2audio copy protection. Those CDs go at about 7.3x for me, and the quality is only 97.1%.
Edit: or any other copy protection, for that matter.

I get about 1.2x on my Asus too. The CDs are NOT copy protected.

typical speeds (non-protected CDs) here:
2 - 3x on my (old) liteon.
6 - 7x on my Aopen (12 - 13x if C2 enabled). More recent models are still faster.

....nice.......
i really want to get a desktop so i can just upgrade parts whenever i want, and let my laptop be portable, and not just an old desktop replacement.
it works pretty well, but it's no desktop.
alright....cool. thanks for the input, boys and ?girls?

Laptop drives are usually slower than desktops. I get 5 - 10 x on my pionner dvd-rom using secure.
With my lite-on LTR-48246S the average ripping speed of an entire CD:
1) With C2 enabled, accurate stream unchecked --- 18x
2) With C2 disabled and accurate stream checked --- 8x
3) Burst mode --- 30x
So I guess for your way of ripping you would be getting around 8x with this drive. If you're lucky you might be able to find it at a local electronics shop for around 15-20 dollars after mail-in rebates!
EDIT: Oh... i gues this would probably not work in your laptop.

...not really sure why i'd use eac w/o accurate stream.....but, i guess it's not any different than any other prog if you're not doing it w/ the secure mode.
c2=apparently not all *that* reliable, cuz it relies on your drive's hardware.....correct?

accurate stream checked will increase ripping speed. Do not use C2 as there is probably no commercial drive available that has 100% correct C2 information.

Think we've discussed this before. Some great working solutions were:
-Restart EAC for every rip, make sure it automatically search for database, insert the CD, let it spin till high speed and then test and copy or just copy
-Uncheck allow speed reduction during ripping in drive options
This way I get with a Memorex 16/48 (CD/DVD) about 8 till 13 speed, which is nice
