Interesting article which explains why DVD+R(w) is technically better than DVD-R(w):

I already read it... warning: it wasn't very easy to follow :P

I almost always heard that +R/W was a better format, but here you can read why...

And I guess there's no doubt which format will win, though dual (+R(w)/-R(w)) drives is what sells more nowadays...

I like dvd-r because it allows me to record my home movies and play them back in my standalone dvd player. I don't think dvd+r allows that. Does it unsure.gif

dvd-r should play in pretty much any player, much like a cd-r should be playable in any cd player. dvd+r requires a newer player designed for dvd+r playback specifically, and IIRC they do exist.

dvd+r is compatible in about as many players as dvd-r (both about 85%). my dvd+r's work in my 4 year old panasonic dvd player.

Regarding DVD+R/+RW compatibility, here's some detailed info:

- DVD+R/+RW FAQ: Playback and Compatibility Issues
- Compatibility List DVD-Video Players
- Compatibility List DVD-ROM Drives
- Compatibility Issues
- Compatibility Bitsettings / Book Type Field

Almost all recent DVD Video Players and DVD-ROM Drives are compatible with DVD+R and most are also compatible with DVD+RW.

hmm, apparently I'm way off. I could swear that DVD-R compatibility was a non-issue and DVD+R required specific support, but apparently not.

DVD-R is winning at this time... the discs to burn on cost much less compered to DVD+R.
DVD-R is also more compatible (see http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Articles/S...y+Tests&index=0 )

When I said +R/+RW was winning I meant the fact that more companies are adopting DVD+R/+RW (like MS, though supporting other formats on their OSs) and which format was best (like the article in JohnV's post explained). Also, most of the new drives now selling are either dual or only +R/+RW (most manufacturers release only dual or +R/RW).
