Full Version: Is my hard drive overheating?

It jumped to 54 celsius degrees after high ultilisation (in documentation max operating temperature is 55oC).

What do you think? Should I set new coolers or something? What else can I do?

you can read out the SMART - Level of yout HD with tools offered by your HD vendor, ask the Support for more

i have IBM´s and use this Tools when i am buying second hand HDs

Hard drives run hot...especially the SCSI variety that turn 10k to 15k (rpm's). Best bet would be to throw another fan in the case (if you have room). If your comp has a fan in the power supply only, then you should add one.

seems to me that a spec stating max operating temperature would be specifying ambient temp that the drive is operated in, not the temp of the drive reported by the drive

Yes, your hard drive is overheating.

Make sure that there is space above the drive for heat to dissipate. You may want to look into a hard drive cooler as well. Even something as simple as a large heatsink attached to the "hot spots" on the drive might be enough to drive the temperature down to a more reasonable level.

What's the ambient temp of your case?

IMO you should seek to keep your drives cool whether they're near their limits or not. There's at least one survey which shows that cooler drives are generally much more reliable than hot ones (there was about a 30% difference in MTBF with IBM SCSI drives over a range of about 10c iirc).

Make sure your drives aren't sitting in deadzones with little airflow, make sure they have space to disapate heat, keep them near the bottom of the case if possible (some cases have bays near the intake fan(s); use them!), and aim to have one or two fans pushing air over them.

I moved my HD to better place, it still gains 54oC sometimes (41-45 when not used but powered on, 46-54 when used), but it cools down faster. Is 54oC really bad for hard drive? Maybe Maxtor knows that this drive will reach such temperature...

I've had Maxtors at 60C for a while without problems. That doesn't mean it's not a bad thing, though smile.gif

Ok, so nothing to worry about. But guy from shop told me that so high tem (54oC) is good reason to reclamation, so after 2 year and 11 months i will send my hard drive and say - hey, it`s overheating, gimme new one smile.gif

BTW. these maxtors worked for at least three years at 60oC?
