That works for servers that do nothing but serve ads such as the evil Doubleclick and Gator or whoever, but AdShield blocks any string you put in, like, a server you don't want to block but which has an ads directory like www.whatever.com/adbanners/ - you can just block /adbanners/ which I really like.


Eh, again, I'm too used to the ease of AdShield. I used to do that before I found it though. That combined with eDexter I think it was.

What I'm trying now though is using Outpost Firewall's ad blocking plugin. Firebird's cache doesn't seem to be as easy to look in as IE's though - can't tell if I'm blocking the ads before they download.

At the recommendation of this thread (and a previous one I remember) I downloaded Mozilla 1.4 & the latest Firebird... I imediately uninstalled Firebird becuase I didn't like it! It looked bad and didn't do things 'properly' - altough I don't know what that means now!

I found my biggest gripe again within a second of loading Mozilla 1.4.. I can't make the taskbar (back, forwards, stop, refresh etc..) go small like I can in IE (i'm not browsing for hours for a skin just for that).. and also I found no way to turn on smooth-scrolling. I use my mouse wheel for scrolling, and it's nice and soft in IE5.0 (unless there is flash on the page) but after a search of the preferences I couldn't find anything in Mozilla?

Are these the kinds of things you can find with plugins etc.. if so, that's just as bad as IE in some respects, because plugins 'just don't count'!

Konquerer usually. Compatability is about as good as Mozilla and it's faster, plus integration with KDE.

Some might complain that this poll is a bit Windowscentric. No Konquerer, Galeon or Safari, let alone lynx (or links). I won't complain about the lack of a Mosaic choice.

edit: Oh, and it's shocking how many people still use IE with its lack of basic features such as tabbed browsing, pop-up blocking, per-site scripting and cookie control, bad .png support, etc.

I think the average user doesn't really care about any of these things. I know that none of my friends do and I would classify them as average users. None of them block pop-ups and don't really seem interested in wanting to when I bring up the topic. The same goes double for cookies because if you block a cookie that a site needs to work properly it's too much of a hassle to unblock it. Also, IE6 cookie control options are pretty much the same as Firebirds.

I use IE because I use RoboForm for form filling and paswrod management and I use SyncIt to manage bookmarks among several different CPUs.

I just checked out Firebird and WOW am I impressed. Almost impressed enough to switch tonight!

I don't know exactly what you need that google toolbar for in Mozilla?
You can just type in your search words in the adressbar where usually the name of the webpage is located, then press coursor down one time and enter and here you are.

For those who don't know, the mouse gestures for Mozilla are available at Optimoz.

And IMHO one of the best skins for Mozilla is the ORBIT 3+1.
There is also a css file available at that link to modify the sitze of the navigation bar for that skin (to make it smaller of course, not bigger).
I prefer the medium size, looks awesome, and you can still use the buttons.

Maybe i will try firebird in a couple of weeks, but these days Mozilla is really stable (v1.4) and still fast, at least that's how it looks for me.
Didn't have any Mozilla crashes for months, although it's under heavy use sometimes.... 20-30 pages opened at the same time.

Not sure how many mac users there are here. But has anyone observed whether Safari (khtml-based) is faster than Camino (gecko-based)?

I made mine look so good, look so like IE 6 Luna, that I would sometimes be confused when I open both browsers at once .

Firebird (sorry, Mozilla Firebird) at this point is still quite hobbyist - you need to spend a few minutes tweaking to get what you really what.



Mozilla Firebird can do that. And yes, I'm currently doing it.


Am I trolling?

I am using IE6 for now. Don't ask why. When IE acts up, I switch to Mozilla, and when that doesn't work either, I resort to Kmeleon. Don't ask why I'm on win32, it's not that important. What's important is that OS X is way more modern.

The best browsers on the planet are... (hehe just "kidding"):

on OSX:

- I've used Safari (OS X), and I liked it
- I've heard a good deal about OmniWeb (OS X)
- I know some people who use Chimera (OS X)
- I'm told iCab is addictive

on win32:

I couldn't care less, but as I hint above having more than one browser might be a good idea.

on linux:
