http://www.r3mix.net has been acquired by Ultimate Search inc.

I'd also like to say my apology to Xiph. Lame MP3 encoder site was not captured intentionally, it was a mistake in server configuration which led to a funny situation.

heh I just saw that the other day while searching for r3mix as many people have used it for reference in the past

Yeah, but who's gonna remember that one... ? smile.gif

IMO... with incorrect/outdated information, the important thing is not to smash or destroy it, but just to get it out of the public eye so the correct information has a better chance. There's always old mirrors floating everywhere on the Web, but they have to be hunted for specifically.

Edit for clarity -- I'm not an "R3mix hater". Except... it hasn't been updated or changed for so long, so it's a "dinosaur website" promoting outdated infos.

Well, http://users.belgacom.net/gc247244/ is the second match that comes up when the word r3mix is typed into Google. I guess it's still an interesting read for nostalgic purposes, even if the information there is mostly outdated.

Unfortunately, r3mix and it's mirror are still the first pages to appear when you search for "mp3 quality" on Google

HA doesn't even appears on the first 10 results. sad.gif

Has anyone tried contacting the owner of this mirror to see if perhaps he would be interested in changing it and/or forwarding to us?

The owner happens to be Roel van der Berghe himself. :B

Reason is out to lunch, and I'm pretty sure it didn't invite Roel. smile.gif

The old versions of IPB wasn't Googlebot friendly, but the new 1.2 version can be. There is even an interface in the adminpanel that you can get stats from Googlebot hits. So if spiderfriendly mode is enabled in IPB, in time there will be more hits from Google and other searchsites.

Maybe HA could use some search engine promotion? How about one of those ~$29.95 packages to auto-submit to several hundred search engines? After awhile, those do start taking effect (in my experience), especially if repeated periodically.

I'd be happy to donate $5.00 or something, for something like that.

Edit -- Of course, we could expect many more "raw newbies" to audio compression... can the board take up that slack?

But is Google taking bribes to increase a site rank? I would guess that, these days, Google is the only search engine that really matters.

I don't know about Google's ranking algorithms (except the paid ones which of course are paid for), but I find it likely that a good ranking (or even just simply presence) on many other search engines has something to do with it -- despite Google's being the most important, it doesn't exist in a vacuum. Other search engines use Google's technology, and probably share data with Google as well.

I figure HA's ranking would probably climb in Google with some general purpose promotion... I think there's a sort of cascading effect where more hits generates a higher ranking, and the higher ranking generates more hits. I could be way off base, but I don't think so.

Not that I agree with all that is said there, but it's a good read nonetheless.

Encourage developers and users alike to link to HA in their websites, professional, personal, or otherwise. If prominent digital audio developers are linking to HA as a reliable digital audio information resource, I'd expect Google to eventually reflect that.

I still use r3mix to convert xing/musicmatch people. I inform them that the rest of the site is incorrect but the xing/musicmatch part, on the analysis part of the site, and show 'em here and to a guide for the --alt presets.

Sure, I could send people here, but r3mix's a lot easier, and even if the graphs aren't at all correct, it gets the job done. wink.gif

AAC
We've been reading about AAC from the early 1998's. There is even an ISO comparison which proves (with statistics...) AAC's superiority to MP3. However, we have not found a single implementation that did not produce serious amounts of distortion in our testing sample. Nobody seems interested any longer.

Nono. He admitted he used only cheapo speakers (the kind of speaker pair you buy for 10 dollars) for his tests.

It has taken very long time for AAC to get good, and get support. It isn't exactly like AAC has taken the world with storm. Great that things are really happening now... finally.

Well, when he did that review, RareWares was already up hosting AACenc 2.x. So, his point of "However, we have not found a single implementation that did not produce serious amounts of distortion in our testing sample." doesn't hold ground. (actually, almost nothing in that site holds ground)

There's nothing I hate more than those bottom-dwelling, Internet marketing SPAM companies who snag expired domains before the owners of the legit sites have a chance to re-register.

I've had this happen to two of my domains in the past mad.gif

So, with that, I'll give these words of advice to all future domain registrees:
Make sure you register with an email address you are certain you will have until the domain expires!!!

I guess that means Roel really dropped off the community.

Now, just waiting for audiofora.com to expire. :B
