sv8 is the next musepack stream version (sv7 is the current one). sv7 has some limitations, thats why --xlevel switch is needed. sv8 is redesigned in many aspects (format wise, quality is not going to increase very much as it is allready nearly perfect) thats why --xlevel swich will not be needed anymore. early test releases of sv8 are available, but there is not "release date" for it yet.

Am I the only one who sees the silence from the MPC developers as an ominous sign that SV8 might not happen? All respect to Frank Klemm especially, he's put a lot of work into this, but it would be reassuring to see at least some timescales and/or indication of progress.

More than anything it should raise the (admittedly slim) chance of MPC support in hardware. I'd be extremely happy with SV7 support, but manufacturers won't commit if they see a major change imminent.

Have a little faith, man. Silence is golden.

@seanyseansean:

SV8 is happening. There're alpha releases already which are actively being developed. SV8 is going to happen. It's not just a design or a speculation that is planned to be released sometime in the future (like Vorbis 1.1 or Wavelet Vorbis)...

And moreover SV8 is open source. Thus it could be employed (if there's anyone out there interested) by any manufacturer, etc. I guess that won't happen though. One of us probably will code the decoder for one such device when such a open spec device comes out (that accepts decoder plugins by third parties). And it will be the first hardware MPC player.
