Hi, after searching for cdr796 on www.consumer.philips.com I can confirm you that this CD recorder has mp3 playback. My experience with Philips products is that mp3 playback means "mp3 standard compliant". This implies VBR mp3 compatibility. You could also download the user manual from the Philips site, perhaps there's even more info in there.

Seems to me that most decent quality (not cheap sh1t) stuff managaes VBR ok.... Thinking about it, I ride past a Curry's, and a Comet on the way home.. they probably have one in there. AND I have a VBR MP3 disc on me

oh yeah, the results were:

It plays VBR fine

(and <128kbps frames, and 320kbps, which I have HEARD cause problems before, but cant believe it)
