Anyone can brief a little bit about the compression method used in MiniDisc?
And, what about those used in LP2 LP4 modes? I know that non-compatible machines cannot playback LPmode-recorded discs normally.

I'm not the most knowligible on this subject, but MiniDisc's use a compression technology by Sony called ATRAC.

From the audiocoding wiki
QUOTE
Codec is used in Sony's Minidisc recorders and the RealAudio 8 compression format.

Versions used by Minidisc:

ATRAC1 Stereo (292 kbps)
ATRAC1 Mono (146 kbps)
ATRAC3 Stereo Longplay 2x (LP2) (132 kbps)
ATRAC3 Stereo Longplay 4x (LP4) (66 kbps)

There are different implementations, they are called:

ATRAC-1 (ATRAC1 Version 1)
ATRAC-2 (ATRAC1 Version 2)
ATRAC-3 (ATRAC1 Version 3)
ATRAC-4 (ATRAC1 Version 4)
ATRAC-4.5 (ATRAC1 Version 4.5)

They have the same bitstream syntax (ATRAC1), but different quality (like MP3's Xing vs. Lame). ATRAC-1 had many problems (pre-echos, metallic sound, 15 kHz bandwidth). The ATRAC-3 implementation was the first with good quality.

Versions used by RealAudio 8:

ATRAC3 352 kbps
ATRAC3 264 kbps
ATRAC3 132 kbps
ATRAC3 105 kbps
ATRAC3 66 kbps

on the ATRAC1 (MD Standard play) and ATRAC3 (MDLP) codecs.

EDIT: Doh! Just noticed the previous poster already posted that link ...

Hmm... So you mean that LP2 and LP4 sound better than the defaul stereo or mono mode?

No, I don't think so. They are lower bitrate.

Edit: They should have used a better naming convention to avoid confusion.

No. The default stereo mode beats the LP2 and LP4 modes for quality. Sony's naming system is very confusing, but on any particular recent Minidisc player/recorder, you will generally have ATRAC1-Version x and ATRAC3 available. The recorder will use ATRAC1-Version x for the default stereo and mono recordings at 292 kbits, and ATRAC3 for the LP2 and LP4 (132 kbits and 66 kbits) modes.

On any given Minidisc recorder. SP and mono is the best, followed by LP2 and then LP4.

Players that are Net-MD (high speed transfers via USB from PC to Minidisc) capable use ATRAC3, and the software basically implements an ATRAC3 encoder based CD ripper and mp3/wav/wma to ATRAC3 encoder/transcoder on your PC for the transfers. Some of these programs support "SP" (292 kbit) transfers, but these are actually ATRAC3 recordings transcoded to 292 kbit prior to transfer, sad, but true. blink.gif

I hope this vaguely shines a dim light on the various options.

There is Atrac3 Plus. Which is 64 & 44kbps. Not sure if thats used in minidics, but i have it on my sony laptop.
NeoRenegade
So far, there is no implementation of ATRAC3plus on Minidisc.

It's just as well, because don't you agree that it sounds like garbage?

My understanding is that ATRAC3 plus is targetted at Sony PDAs, memory stick Walkman's and a couple of the new Discman's that now support MP3 and ATRAC3.

As posted above, it is low bitrate, and sounds pretty ordinary... :x
