After the popular What is for you the best album ever ? and the even more popular What are you listening to right now ? ... threads, here's another music related thread. tongue.gif

I'm just curious to know what you favourite album cover(s) is/are?

//remark
I'm not asking just which Pink Floyd album cover is your favourite, though theirs are surely among the best. wink.gif

This Mortal Coil - Blood

I've never been a 4AD addict (I mean concerning their album covers) but I have to admit that one is a really beautiful one. And moreover, it's an excellent album that I am happy to own.

// To all Pink Floyd fans: a Syd Barrett song is covered in that album: "Late Night" sung by Caroline Crawley. wink.gif

The music is even "trippier" than the cover... tongue.gif

Very guilty pleasure.
But this cover hipnotized me when I it originally came out.

And of course, you just gotta love the sheer promise and hope of this cover. Back when people tought that computers would make us happier (wait, they have!)

Although I could draw an entirely different set of "art" covers from my collection, some of my favorites (and the covers which sprang to mind first, this evening) are photographic:

John Coltrane's Blue Train (1957)

Not really a CD cover, rather, a Boxed Set cover.

A classic. There's also this one cover that i can't find right now; it looks like a cheap CD-R cover with a handwritten title. Looked quite funny in the store.

Though I don't own the album, when we had a thread about extraordinary/moving/extreme/impressive covers in the local music newsgroup, this came up.

Not a favourite cover, but a moving one.

Ahh, plastic surgery disaters. Great cover, but bad album, marking the beginning of the downhill slide for DK.

I'm surprised no one mentioned this one yet (regarding guilty pleasures har har)

Devo's Greatest Misses (and similar, 'Greatest Hits') definately gets my vote:

As for worst album cover, it goes to Chick Corea. He designed it himself!! (guess he's only an artist in one sense of the word)

Could it be this?
Because the only other CD cover that looked like a CD-R was by the Mexican band Titan, which I highly doubt ever saw the light in...Germany? (since the flags are gone I have trouble remembering were everybody is from)

By the way, I also thought of the Blind Faith cover but I guess that my selection pretty much proved the point that I am a horny SOB with no class wink.gif

It also could be this one:

Which looks much more like a real CDR.
CiTay
Yes dev0, that was it. But AtaqueEG's is also a good example. smile.gif

There were some crazy covers back in the days, for example, one had a blinking LED inside (i don't remember the artist... U2.. Prince.. Bowie?). Or the experiments with different materials (Pearl Jam - Vitalogy)...

"pink floyd - pulse" had a blinking led insinde (on the side, not on the front cover IIRC).

Yes, it was on the side. That must be at least 5 or 6 years ago. I remember how some LEDs were already out of power, it was a pretty amusing sight in the shelf.

@rc55: That's funny! I guess my whole encoded collection would belong under that cover, since it's all in --alt-preset insane...

@Floydian Slip: I have to agree about the Shine On box cover as well. rjamorim introduced me to this cover image, and it's definitely among the best I've ever seen...Storm's a genious!

My favorite album covers and (booklet art) are mostly drawn by Travis Smith, whose work is quite fine indeed and should be checked out by all connoisseurs of album art:

http://www.seempieces.com/

You may know Travis Smith via his CD covers for Katatonia, Death, Control Denied, Iced Earth, Devin Townsend, Strapping Young Lad, and many others.
Audible!
I've always been partial to The King smile.gif
Also, the cover of Paul Desmond/Jim Hall's Glad to Be Unhappy, which I might end up scanning because the link quality is poor.

Rather than tick off all the dial-uppers, I created a small gallery of some I like.

You can see them here.

I thought about an entire cover art collection. But when Photoshop got done it amounted to 45 pages and over 25+ MB's!

Eh, maybe some other time. wink.gif
