Full Version: Monkey's Audio new lease of life?

From frequenting the lossless compression board, I noticed a general theme - people who didn't use Monkey's Audio sad.gif gave the reason that it didn't have constant development or was open source (e.g. like FLAC). The MAC format could be outdated/unsupported within an 'archiving lifetime' - why not use a format that will still be used 20 years from now?

After visiting the MAC page, I noticed that an upgraded version is under testing, and the code is becoming available for other developers. unsure.gif

I don't want to start a further debate about MAC v FLAC v WavPack etc, but I would appreciate it if people up to date could confirm that MAC is still under revision (and not left as a finished hobby as I have read) and is well worth considering 'future-proof wise'

Thanks guys biggrin.gif

I recall also reading people who weren't too happy that MAC also broke compatiblity at one point in time.

That would certainly put me on edge...

> Monkey's Audio new lease of life?, Worth giving it another look?

No. smile.gif

I've heard promises of releasing the source, as well as less restrictive licensing for over three years now. During that time, FLAC has had time to mature into a full-blown feature-rich, opensource patent-free lossless codec that is being continously worked on by a community of volunteers. That can't be said for APE smile.gif

I know what my archive DVD-R's are being encoded to.

I'm not a coder, but it was my understanding from people much smarter than I that there are key parts of the encoding/encoding algorthms missing from the SDK... or maybe it was just the GUI. I can't remember.

No, everything mandatory is there.

The Visual Basic GUI, Winamp plugin and Cool Edit filter are missing.
