Is it me, or does the glorious search function merely put the oldest posts first when you search in order of relevance?

search = +lame +flt +cool blade
Hmm, there didn't seem to be anything remotely relating to what I was after (why was BladeMp3ENC.h included in the cool_lame sources?).. And then I noticed, wtf, these posts are from 2001.

Lo and behold, if you go to the last page of this search, posts from July 2003.

What's odd is these are completely different results (about 315 in total) compared to the.. 2 results I get for search = +lame +flt +cool blade searching by most recent first.

Why do these forum designers refuse to allow even partially competent search engines to make it into their design? It's beyond a joke to me, I'm using google to search HA from now on..

edit: spelling and removing SIDs

I should at least add something constructive rather than just being annoyed smile.gif

Is there anything that can be done about this with a mod/hack - I'm not sure if the IPF modding community is as active as the phpBB one though.. If not, someone might want to contact the IPF people about it if they don't already know about their incompetence smile.gif

Howabout you do this instead of just complaining?
Mac
Haha smile.gif I'm happy for IPF to suck as I'm a phpBB 'fanboy', it just annoys me when using your forums.

It is more in your interest than mine to promote a "search before you post" mentality.

I'm lazy.

iPB hardly sucks compared to phpBB anyway, and I don't think your disliking search functionality will change that much.

Besides, you're the only one so far who has complained about the new search function, and what's more, the "most relevant" isn't the only search option, so you don't have to use it at all.

I never said IPF sucks compared to phpBB. I am happy for it to do so however.

I remember a thread about the new 1.2 search facility, heralding it for having relavence included. Search by relavence is also the default option, and if it is giving out the worst search results (2 year old posts first) I think it would cause problems for the average user.

Uhh... those statements are kind of contradictory. You are (am) happy for it to do so implies that you think it does already suck in comparison. If you were only talking theoretically and didn't think it sucks, it'd be better to say you "would" be happy for it to suck.

You are completely mistaken. Go back and reread my post:

I didn't say anything about search by relevance, I only mentioned boolean support.

My use of English and dialect is poor, especially when I try to talk cleverly smile.gif As you say, I would be happy for IPF to suck if a better free forum software comes out.

Sadly, I have gone back and checked the post I referred to, and it was someone saying a search using relavence would be helpful for newbies looking for information smile.gif

On a side note Dibrom, how are you so skilled at arguing? I feel defeated even though my original point stands as tall as me smile.gif

Well, I'm not crazy about the search function either, but the truth is the phpBB one sucks about the same amount, but in different ways.

I think it is quite likely that the quality of the searches mostly seems bad because Google has us all spoiled.
