Full Version: Why doesn't somebody add MPC support on Iriver?

I'm pretty sure that this has been discussed before and I'm sorry if if this is getting sort of repetitive but why doesn't somebody just hack the iriver firmware to allow for MPC playback. There is a unpacker and packer available here. I have been reading post here for a while and there is so many smart people here that know so much about all sorts of things. And I even read a thread here a while ago that said that MPC playback has been achieved on an ARM processor. Isn't that the same one that Iriver uses? I know that a lot of people here have Iriver imp's and it would be really great if just one person tried to bring MPC playback to Iriver players. biggrin.gif

Thanks,

I remember similar issue was discussed before. The main problem was there was no way of doing a trial and error with iRiver hardware. Once the firmware is modified to another hacked firmware, there's no procedure to clear it. So the player dies once its firmware is modified unless the new firmware is developed to a point to read other firmwares from the disc and allow recovery.

Someone could probably write an emulator if they got really ambitious.

Embedded programming is a real bitch from what I gather.

Well so far on that link that I gave you, those russian hackers have added playback of some .mix or .wav files. That sort of might count like a codec addition. They also corrected display of Russian fonts and have set the russian language to default. Not a bad start. I tried emailing the maker of the site (p. maximov I think) about adding MPC support but I haven't received a reply so I don't know if he got it or not.

Not exactly... enabling playback of MP3 files with a WAV header (and extension) was simply a matter of adding that as a viable extension in the area that defines valid extensions for MP3s. No "codec" enhancement has yet been accomplished.

Anyway,
he who manages to do it, will be worshipped as a God here on Hydrogenaudio wink.gif

I also found this website that uses the firmware packer and unpacker to change the font of the iriver imp player. Not very useful but a small breakthrough none the less. Maybe we should try to contact the creator to see if he would be willing to at least try to implement MPC support. Just another idea.
