Has anyone noticed this around?

According to the site "it is an output plugin for Winamp which doubles the samplerate of your music and filters them with Linear Interpolation for a clean, clear sound".

What do you think?

Linear interpolation is bad. It causes nonlinear distortion and bad frequency response. The good interpolation is sinc or bandlimited interpolation, that is the one that SSRC uses.

While there are certainly people on this forum who can address the
technical aspects of this better than I can, even from my limited knowledge,
I believe there are some serious flaws in the theory behind this. The main
one being, you can't "over-sample" information back into a file that
wasn't there to begin with.

If I understand linear interpolation correctly, his/her technique is
to simply place additional sample-points in a straight line between
existing samples. Again, others in here can address this better than I,
but I believe the MP3 algorithm is more complex than that, and thats
not the proper way to do it.

Just for the record, I did try the plug-in out. And not surprisingly,
I didn't notice any difference, albiet, a quick-and-dirty comparison.

Thank you for the clarification KikeG...I found out about this plugin through another forum, where someone presented it as "a serious improvement of sound" etc. Time to offer him some details about it. rolleyes.gif

Don't use this plugin, it won't improve the sound. 96 khz soundcards already do this job in their own oversampling circuit (and do a much, much better job than this plugin). What the plugin will do is *add* high frequency distortions above 20khz, possibly giving a "brighter" sound.

What would be useful for SB LIVE users is a plugin that resamples everything to 48khz with a good quality bandlimited sinc interpolator, as the live does this internally when the sampling rate is different than 48khz but does not do a very good job and can be quite noisy.

???

SSRC plugins (waveout and directsound) for Winamp 2.xx, or built-in foobar2000 SSRC resampler do this job.
