If you want to put Speex content into WAVE and AVI files, you can now
do so. wink.gif On http://www.openacm.org you will find the codec. Its status has
just been updated to an official release and you should no longer see
crashes when using VirtualDub and CDex.

Just be warned that the codec only accepts 8000, 16000 and 32000 Hz
because of the codec's design and the lack of an internal resampler.
This is why VirtualDub may not show you any Speex modes when using
a 44.1KHz source signal.

Make sure you download the 1.0.1.1 release and not the older 1.0.0.0
beta version. The news and project status page have some additional
information. Source code is also available (compiles best on Visual
Studio .NET 2003)

I think I managed to integrate Speex ACM into Netmeeting. At least the codec for a bitrate shows up. I'll have to test it with a friend and then make a release soon.

But is Speex better than Acelp.net, even?
DarkAvenger
I haven't heard of acelp.net yet, but checking out their web page it doesn't seem to be freely available. And compared to all other speech codecs I (quickly) tested speex is better, esp as I can choose higher bitrate/sampling rate.

I got my prog so far, that it should be able to reg all speex modes an perhaps even other ACM codecs for Netmeeting. Just need to test, whether Netmeeting works with the codecs.
rjamorim
I mentioned Acelp because it is (was?) the default in NetMeeting.

I plan to come up with a vocodec listening test in some months.
DarkAvenger
Hmm, AFAIK G723 is the default codec. At least I can't remember to see acelp in the codec selection.
DarkAvenger
Damn, the test fails. Netmeeting uses the codec, but only erranous output arrives. Either I set some parameters wrong in the reg process or speex acm has to be modified to be used with netmeeting...

Ehhm, does anybos know the acm author's email? I couldn't find it.

He's at the Speex-dev mailing list. I suggest you subscribe and try to reach him from there.

Ah, thx for the hint.
DarkAvenger
Ok, we got a Speex mode running. smile.gif

Wow.

I used OpenPhone with JensRex a while back, using Speex at 0.5kbp/sec was more than cool just to have a conversation with.

The quality is so good! I highly recommend anyone who wants to get into VoIP to try it.

Unfortunately I couldn't get Openphone working. I am using an FLI4L router, like my friend I tried to phone. Though opening the ports, it just connected but couldn't get speech.

So neetmeeting with speex confirmed modes: 8kHz Q3, 16Khz Q4 and Q5
