I was waiting the whole day long for the official release now. mad.gif

Edit:
Boahhh ! 20,7 megs to download. I still remeber the time, when Nero had only 5 or 6 MB.

I still can't buy it yet. I guess I'll just have to play with the demoversion until they update the online store.

Is it just me, or there is no help file anywhere in Nero 6?

WTF...

Did somebody manage to work with Nero Recode? All DVD files I feed to it (both encrypted and decrypted ones) are refused.
bman1
Recode works for me using decrypted files that I put through IfoEdit's "DVD Authoring" mode. I have yet to try it on just plain decrypted files.

I got an e-mail from them with links to both U.S. and European versions. (U.S. version has link for all the help files). I saw the U.S. version has Nero Mix; while the European version has Nero Media Player instead of Nero Mix. Can you tell me which is the better one to get?
Also- assume un-install 5.5 first?
Thanks- cadabra3

You can download the demo version from our homepage :

So the only way to encode AAC HE with it is to use the nero audio player (this european version!?) seems a little clunky never used these types of things in nero before... but it works...

Just tried it with Gin Blossoms - Alison Road... thought i'd take it easy with some rock but it turns out the cymbals and tight drum in it make it quite difficult to encode... I can hear problems right up to 60k and maybe 80k ... I guess its quite a tricky one... playing the file in foobar and the nero player shows the clear difference.. it is impressive a difference... are there going to be quality discussions on this then!? if so where? I can upload a sample from this song as it does appear to be quite difficult for AAC HE to cope with until given a fairly large amount of bits..

Just an aside... at what point does the SBR component become redundant... i see the LC AAC is 44.1khz by 80k/s ?!!? is the cut off here.. i think i can hear more high pitch stuff in the nero player but not as much as the lower rates...

So i'm not totally blown away.. its by no means transparent on my headphones... but i bet on speakers and other systems it'll be passable.. especially with "easier" music... be interesting to see how this goes... knowing that i can just get the nero player license key for $20 or so is tempting and i'll probably go for that just to play with it... comparing it against ogg at these rates will be interesting tho... more testing tomorrow... what does everyone else think?

DVD Author > Author New DVD (At the top, in the toolbar)

It requires that your VOB is demuxed to m2v video and ac3 audio, which you can do with another program - VOB Edit. Once you have demuxed your VOB(s), use DVD Author in IfoEdit to rejoin them. Then send these rejoined files to Nero Recode and it should work.

So. Can i update Nero 5.5 to Nero 6 wihtout any special trics?
mmortal03
For those who don't know, you don't need the main recording package of Nero 6 to encode with HE AAC (or to try it out). All you need to download is the NeroMix software. It looks like you will be able to buy a license for it separately as well, I think the "buy lincense" pop up said somewhere around 20 dollars, which isn't bad at all. I am trying out the HE AAC encoding quality of Nero right now. One of the main reasons I did not want to install the full package is because I already have Nero 5.5 on my computer, and did not want to copy over it with the demo of Nero 6. So for those who already have another version of Nero, you won't have to install over it with the Nero 6 demo to try out the Nero Digital audio encoding.

Btw, I really like how NeroMix encodes from the playlist. Ingenious! One thing I would like to note is that there is no option to output the encodes to the same directory as the source. You have to set a static directory in the options menu for all encode outputs. By default, the encodes will be put in "C:\Program Files\ahead\MyMusic".
Toff
I can't play 5.1 HE AAC files with Nero Media Player :'(
I got a "Can't open output audio device"

if only FAAD2 was already updated laugh.gif
mmortal03
I played some 30-40 kb/s VBR preset HE AAC encodes in NeroMix (which can play the SBR stuff) and then in my Winamp player (which cannot play the SBR stuff). I was amazed at the difference in quality! The cymbals sound so much closer to the original with SBR than without. It sounded almost exactly the same, if not the same. Of course, I have not had time to do any ABX testing, but man, this stuff really does what they say it does with high frequencies. Playing the same song in Winamp was almost unlistenable, because of the lack of SBR playback. Just wanting to say that I am impressed with this stuff, AAC+ looks to have quite a lot of potential, which I can now say from experience smile.gif

On how to encode AAC HE

QUOTE
Or the encode files dialog, or the save tracks dialog, or the waveeditor...

Where are these options... I too have only installed "NeroMediaPlayer" this is the same as NeroMix i assume.. just localised?! anyways i didn't see any of these options... all i can see is encoding via the playlist, which isn't too bad.. its just if these options are there elsewhere, perhaps allowing you to output to same directory as the source files then that'd be good...

Going to test some more today.... when i was saying that i wasn't that impressed I dont think i was realising just how low a rate it was doing at ~30k and yet sounding impressively close... will test against ogg shortly...

When is the FAAD (is that right?) decoder being released...although neromediaplayer is quite good, like the hifi component appearance smile.gif

I've encoded a couple albums using HE-AAC. When playing in NeroMIX I right click a file and choose 'selected file properties'. No matter what file I do that on, the date comes up 1969 and the filesize is always the same size. Does anyone else see this as well?

Wonder how long it will take for Ahead to send out the free update registration codes for we who bought 5.5 recently. Demo expires August 31, so September 10th? wink.gif

You must have read my mind.

Just to be on the safe side, I proceeded actively, here.

Even though it says we don't have to register if we purchased 5.5 recently, I went ahead (no pun) and did so, and they have already e-mailed me a reference code, so that I can keep on checking the status of my case.

Yes. I have as well. I decided I might as well post the bug in the following thread along with the other bug. It would be best to keep this thread "bug free" and leave another for them, imo.

Does anyone know why Nero StartSmart is trying to connect to the www when I open it? I had the same issue with NeroBurning Rom as well. I was not trying to update Nero's Virus Database or to connect to freedb.

What I get with Kerio PF: Outgoing Connection:
'Nero StartSmart' from your computer wants to connect to 62.93.192.11.insoft.fra2.de.mfnx.net [62.93.192.11], port 80
'Nero Burning ROM' from your computer wants to send UDP datagram to 255.255.255.255, port 5000
menno
Dunno, but you can try turning off "automatically check for updates" after presseing the big Nero logo on the top left corner of StartSmart.

Menno
nyarlathotep
Thanks Menno. I should have thought about that: I didn't realise that big Nero logo had some features hidden.
Now NeroSmartStart is not going to try to connect anymore.

The same issue remains with NeroBurningRom.

edit: NeroBurningRom is trying to connect only when the "preferences" box is open.

Hmm, Nero 6 is OK, but it is getting very, very bloated. I know that sounds cliche'd, but it really is. I can't turn off all the extra stuff i dont need at install time. Regarding the main Nero 6 application, as for UI updates, well, 75% of the UI has no ClearType support, while the other 25% does. The new icons have no alpha transparent edges, toolbars dont quite line up, dialogues are out or alignment, backgrounds wrong colours, etc etc.. These inconsistancies are important, becuase we are in the age of XP now, not 9x. UI's are important now, especially in a commercial application. And, i also believe the XP facelift was one of the key things that was new in Nero 6.

Having said that, there can be no doubt that nero has a superb backend for CD/DVD recording. And to be honest, there isn't that many ways in which that backend it could be improved between releases, hence the concentration on being a jack-of-all trades kinds of suite. I would like to see a Nero Lite application, something small which burns CD's, and just burns CDs, with a neat, modern, concise, UI. Even better, since nero has a great SDK for these things, someone could code their own frontend to the application. And, if i have time, i think i might just do that.
kwanbis
totally agree, i like nero, but i would only buy a "Nero Lite" version ... i have tried the wave editor and such, and it can't compare to CoolEdit, so why should i pay for something i would never use? maybe menno can help with this ... i think Ahead should provide 2 options, or 3, a Nero Standard, Pro, Deluxe, as roxio does .. and Standard being Nero Only
askoff
Does AAC encoder with unlimited encodes come only with buying the 15$ AAC plugin or is it included in NERO 6 retail pack?
feces1223
any Nero is generally good but, not for producing any files. Although it is an all-in-one app now, I wouldn't trust HE-AAC encoding as its just been developed and the mp3enc is fHg unsure.gif. The cd-r audio burning is perfect though and can easily knock the socks off any other software.
puntloos
What about LC AAC encoding though?

I seem to remember (rmajorim help me out here smile.gif ) that quicktime only does CBR aac encoding, so is nero VBR rivalling quicktime 6's CBR?

I know this isnt a FAIR question since VBR should really be better even if the encoder is worse, but still.. am I right that right now Nero LC encoding will get you the best audio quality at a certain bitrate?

How is the Nero codec anyway? I assume its still undergoing improvements, but is the nero6 AAC codec already better than the one rmajorim's test used at the same settings, or will we have to wait for a new version?

(Im not interested in HE since I have an ipod, and it only supporst LC, as far as I know, and anyway, HE was only intended for 'really low bitrate' (8-96kbit) right?)

According to some tests Guruboolez performed by the time of the liestening test, QuickTime 128kbps CBR was better or similar to Nero VBR streaming.

It has changed since the version I used it the test, but I don't know if people did tests comparing that version to the current one. it might have improved, but I guess Ivan focused more on the HE implementation rather than the tweaking of the VBR profiles.

I have Nero 5.5 installed on Win Xp Home machine which is working fine with other writing software. I would like to try the Nero 6.0 demo but I do not want to overwrite 5.5. or install InCd. Can this be done? Thanks.

The demo does not contain InCD (IIRC), but there is no way to install it Nero 6.0 separately. It will upgrade Nero 5.5 to 6.0.
svzurich
Slightly different download option listed under Updates, offering InCD as the third Nero download, and the third on the demo list is not listed fourth.

Seriously, about iTunes and apple codecs: (sorry this is slightly off-topic) but how is apple improving their codecs? Are they conforming to the big-lumbering-beast image and once its out and doesnt crash or cause inconvenience they keep a release out there till kingdom come?

Or do they regularly update retweaked, upgraded, improved codecs?

And (back on topic sleep.gif ) what is Ahead's policy on this?

Hurm.. could you please explain for those of us that don't understand much about english expressions? happy.gif

If this is what you are asking: I am under the impression that the engineer team is constantly working on improving the codec, and the latest stable code is added to QuickTime whenever there is a QuickTime release.

That was what I was asking B)

Soooo then for Quicktime, the last question remains: how often do they release a stable version? As you surely know the encoder market is a busy place nowadays..

And what about Nero? Any Nero guys care to comment on how you plan to deliver upgraded codecs? And when will they beat quicktime? tongue.gif

Heh, call me slow.
After years of using Nero, it was not until I saw up-close this version's icons that it finally dawned on me what Nero Burning ROM meant... Nero (the emperor) burning Rome (the city) - an historical event. I had always thought the icon was of a CD on fire, but now I see it is actually the Collisseum burning.
Am I the only that thick here? biggrin.gif
