With all those Winamp 2.x versions build,
I'm wondering which Winamp 2.x version you're
concidering to be the best version build.
Which version has the best mp3-decoder?

Mp3 decoder hasn't change in winamp since version 2.666. I would suggest trying the latest winamp 2.xx version and install only the components you want.
I am sure that some people will suggest to you to try foobar2000. It's what I am using too, but the decition is yours.
Without going into the whole foobar2k thing, 2.95 should be the best Winamp version to use right now. Nullsoft seem to have pulled it from their server (it was never officially announced anyway).
2.95 lite2.95 standard
Just to save confusion, the version of the mpeg decoder has changed but the algorithms for decoding have most definitely not. I hope they add 24-bit output, that would be sweet.

In that case, I'll do a search for the 2.666 version.
There's something about that version number... B)
And I'll give Foobar a try.

i wouldn't recommend 2.666 it has some ridiculous stability problems. it's the most unstable winamp version i ever had installed actually.
however. you can find almost any winamp version on

The Lite one.

The only difference between the "lite" and "standard" downloads is the number of features that come with them. Lite will just be the basic player, and standard should be a larger install with some more stuff. You'll have to check for yourself to see if you want any of the options Standard comes with.

Nullsoft still has version 2 available on their servers. You have to click on the "Download version 3" link on the front page. It then takes you to a "download winamp 3" screen, but at the top of the page has a "click here to download winamp 2" link:
http://classic.winamp.com/download/index.jhtmlIt's 2.91.

The same here. 2.666 was the most unstable version ever released, that version prompted me to start archiving each stable Winamp version since during the 2.666 era I had to use another media player which royally sucked.

Well, I managed to snatch a copy of Winamp 2.95 Lite.
Is there any info why Nullsoft removed 2.95 after a few hours?
In case anybody wants to give it a try:
Winamp 2.95 (ALL versions)

Why? Because it's the latest 2.x version.

From the Winamp forum:
QUOTE
2.95 was not released as planned due to several issues. Firstly, there may still be portions of the code that are not ready to release, but criticaly there are licensing issues with some third party technologies being used.
Parts of 2.95 prevent it being released in it's current form until these legal issues are resolved.
How long with this take?
AOL legal is sorting it out I hear. This could take time, as lawyers move slow.
Can I mirror the leaked 2.92/2.95?
No.
Heheh...
Yes. The reason is (unofficially?) explained in the winamp forums in this thread :
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?th...AC&pagenumber=2Basically, it is because they have added an AAC decoder to it, and this requires a license agreement.
Other than that, i think it's a good version.
Edit: ARG! was two minutes late!

( had to search for the topic

)
it's also a good version because (I believe) it can rip CD's to Ogg (not just play back). coupled with AAC support, I think it's a really great player

oh yeah and since 2.90 they've got that internet radio AND tv in the library. I watch music videos from time to time

it's user run, but really fast!

Well, here's ONE reason why I'm looking for an older, but good version of Winamp.
I just use Winamp to play my MP3 collection and THAT'S IT!
I would be happy with a Winamp that just plays MP3's, has directsound support
and no minibrowser or whatsoever.
Can any of you tell me if there is a version of Winamp between 2.666 and 2.95
that doesn't have the minibrowser function?
I'm using the MP3 standard because I have a great MP3 soundsystem in my car
which (thank god) also runs VBR MP3's

I don't understand you... i mean, you don't have to use the minibrowser? Just install 2.95 lite and use the features you need. You can even delete unnecessary plugins from the winamp\plugin\ directory.
But to be honest, you sound like someone who would love
foobar2000...

This is just my two cents here... I couldn't really tell which version was better than what, but you'll probably want to download the standard version, and here's why.
The lite version does not come with a Vorbis decoder. You'd have to find and get the in_vorbis.dll from Peter's page, which is just about the only place I know where you can get it.

Sorry Skillz, but the Minibrowser (at that point called "Winamp Browser") was added with version 2.10. However, you can toggle it on and off using Alt+T... and once you've set everything as you want it, simply make "winamp.ini" read-only to avoid accidentally turning unwanted options back on.

Hmmm, I just found that out the hard way...Installing old versions until there was no more Minibrowser

2.091 uses approx. 8mb memory
2.95 uses around 11mb memory
I'm not going to bitch about 3 mb

Thanks for the Winamp.ini tip!
I am currently using 2.81 and I think I'll stay with this version.

I'd recommend 2.91 to those who only need mp3 playback, or who don't need video support.
There is such a thing as deselecting optional components during installation.

Well I hope you preferred Winamp over Foobar not because the latter was too....Notepad-ish

.
winamp plugins are fully optional. install what you want. leave out what you don't. you can simply even delete the conforming .dll's.
don't install minibrowser, library,....
but in the end 2.95 should be the version to go.

I recommend the newest version because everything before 2.7(something) had a security vulnerability because of the bug in zlib. I haven't heard of anyone getting bitten by it, but it never hurt anyone to be a little careful.
For reference, there are multiple versions of 2.95 floating around. I know of the following "No AOL on desktop" versions (see the MD5 sums below), although there may be others:
5a139bf3b9bc2c04f3b56cd9f2bff0ab *winamp295_full_noaod.exe (1st leaked)

Amano,
How do I uninstall or NOT install the minibrowser?
Is there a way to remove it?

Jul 28 2003, 15:13
Heh, I am a recent convert to Foobar2k, but I still think Winamp is a great piece of software. Sure, the minibrowser and video can be a bit of bloatware, but just disable them (afaik, they can't be uninstalled) and you've got a decent skinnable multi-format player with a lot of plugins and with which listening to the radio is a breeze.
Not sure what your reason for getting rid of the minbrowser is.
I don't think it can be disabled, i.e. you will always be able to open the window.
You can, however, stop it connecting to the internet if that is what you want.
Either disable internet connection in Preferences > Settings > No internet connection available. Bear in mind this will also break CDDB look ups. The file 'winampmb.htm' in the main Winamp folder is used for display if no net connection is available, you can replace it with a picture of the wife and kids or whatever you choose.
Or install the
gen_nomoremb plugin from Oddsocks. This will prevent radio streams opening their websites. This is designed to kill the pop up adverts that some streams inflict on you (even with the mb window closed or Winamp minimized)
I stuck with 2.81 for a while as I rely on CDReader for access to cdplayer.ini (CDReader isn't fully functional in the 2.9 series). I'm slowly coming round to 2.91 and now use CDReader from 'Explorer' and the default CD plugin from the Winamp menu. (Having both plugins installed at the same time is not usually recommended BTW and may lead to problems).
